Patriots Eagles Odds

The Philadelphia Eagles host the New England Patriots Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field. What appeared to be one of the best NFL games coming into the season has lost some of its luster. Philadelphia hasn’t been able to live up to expectations, and they may be without Michael Vick for this one. New England has many injury concerns of their own, especially on defense. The Patriots have won three straight meetings with the Eagles, including a 31-28 home victory as a whopping 24-point favorite in 2008.
As of this writing, this game is off the board in most places as we await the status of Vick. One book has installed a line of New England -3 over Philadelphia.
New England
The Patriots are starting to put it all together. New England (7-3, 4-1 home) has won back-to-back games in blowout fashion to grab a two-game lead in the AFC East division. Their biggest win of the year came on November 13th with a 37-16 road victory over the New York Jets. That triumph gave the Patriots the season sweep of their biggest rivals, which is huge in a tiebreaker scenario. The Patriots came back on Monday Night Football and took care of the Kansas City Chiefs 34-3 at home.
New England appeared to be in a dogfight with the Chiefs after going scoreless in the first quarter, and trailing 3-0 after 15 minutes. Kansas City had their chances, but the Patriots’ defense continually came up with big plays. They intercepted Tyler Palko three times, and allowed just 334 total yards for the game. Tom Brady had a pedestrian 234 passing yards and two touchdowns. Tight end Rob Gronkowski was the star of this one, catching four balls for 94 yards and both scoring passes from Brady.
This team comes in ranked 2nd in the NFL in total offense (426.7 yards/game), but they are still dead-last in total defense (404.2 yards/game). The Patriots have a bunch of injuries on defense. LB Brandon Spikes, S Patrick Chung, and CB Devin McCourty are all questionable. Also, T Matt Light and WR Deion Branch are questionable offensively. Brady is completing 65.4 percent of his passes for 3,266 yards with 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Wes Welker (74 receptions, 1,028 yards, six TD) leads the league in receiving. He extended his streak to 88 games with at least one catch, though his first reception against the Chiefs didn’t come until there were six minutes remaining.
Philadelphia
The Eagles came into the season as one of the biggest favorites to win the Super Bowl. Now, they are just trying to stay alive for a playoff spot. Philadelphia (4-6, 1-4 home) is going to need to solve their problems at Lincoln Financial Field Sunday, a place that has not been too kind to them in the city of Brotherly Love. They managed to keep their playoff hopes alive last Sunday with a huge 17-10 road win over the New York Giants.
Despite playing without Vick, the Eagles were able to rally behind backup Vince Young, along with one of their most dominant defensive efforts of the season. Philadelphia held the Giants to just 278 yards while forcing two turnovers, and they managed to rack up 391 yards of offense. Aside from throwing three interceptions, Young played well, completing 23 of 36 passes for 258 yards and a touchdown. LeSean McCoy rushed for 113 yards in a balanced attack. Tied 10-10 in the fourth quarter, Philly put together an 18-play drive that took 8:51 off the clock. It was capped off by a game-winning 8-yard touchdown pass from Young to Riley Cooper with 2:45 to play.
Philadelphia ranks 3rd in the league in total offense (415.5 yards/game) and 12th in total defense (333.4 yards/game). Leading receiver Jeremy Maclin (46 receptions, 612 yards, four TD) also did not play against the Giants, and he is questionable to return as he recovers from a hamstring injury. Young has proven that he is capable of handling the job if Vick can’t go, and whoever is under center should have no problem moving the ball against this suspect New England defense. Expect a heavy dose of LeSean McCoy either way. He is the NFL’s leading rusher with 1,019 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Betting Trends
The Patriots are 47-23-3 ATS in their last 73 road games, and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 vs. a team with a losing record.
The Eagles are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 games overall, including 1-7 ATS in their last 8 home games.
