Patriots Jets Predictions
Written September 11, 2008 by Jack Jones
In what might be the most scrutinized game of the week, the New England Patriots will head into New York to take on the Jets. Jack Jones breaks down the NFL odds on this marquee wee 2 matchup, which currently show the Jets as 2-point favorites over the Pats and a total set at 37.
The tide in the AFC East has definitely changed with the news that Tom Brady will have to undergo season-ending knee surgery. Now instead of a Super Bowl MVP and perenial Pro Bowler under the center the Patriots will have to turn to career backup Matt Cassel. Who has spent three years as Brady’s understudy after riding the pine for four years behind Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart at USC. Cassel hasn’t even started a game since he was in high school back in 1999. Of course, Pats fans have been saying that the last time they lost a starter early in the season was 2001, when a guy that nobody had ever heard of by the name of Tom Brady came in and took the team to a Super Bowl title.
With Brady out of the picture, the New York media is already turning up the heat on head coach Eric Mangini and the Jets. With the acquisition of Favre and the spending of $140 million on free agents, just making the playoffs as a Wild Card isn’t going to be good enough. They need to win the division and contend because the window seems to be open right now. Next year might be too late with Favre aging and Brady expected to make a full recovery.
Even without Brady, this offense is loaded with weapons so all Cassel really has to do is manage the game and get them the ball. In the backfield this team has three quality running backs in Laurence Maroney, Sammy Morris, and LaMont Jordan. Morris had 53 yards and a touchdown on only ten carries against the Chiefs, while the last time the Pats played the Jets Maroney scorched them for 104 yards and a touchdown. Moss tore up New York last year as well, catching 14 balls for 262 yards, while Welker has had six or more catches in each of his last five games against these AFC East foes. This team still had 338 yards of offense against Kansas City, even with Brady missing most of the game. The Brett Favre era got off to the kind of start the Jets were hoping for last Sunday, when he had a pair of touchdown passes against the Dolphins. His 126 passer rating was achieved by hitting seven different receivers. Thomas Jones did his part for the running game, going over the 100-yard mark and his teams are now 26-13 in games when he gets at least 20 touches. Jerricho Cotchery should play a big role in this game after having a 56-yard touchdown last week, he’s caught six passes in four straight against the Pats.
It seems like year after year New England dominates defensively without a bunch of big name stars. The Chiefs only managed 284 yards and 10 points and Mike Vrabel was a big reason with two sacks. He has been a menace to the Jets, recording seven in his last five trips to the Meadowlands. Things will be a little tougher for Brett and the Jets this week than they were against Miami, but the balance of power appears to have changed.
