New England Patriots 2009 NFL Predictions
Written August 22, 2009 by Nick Scarpa
For the last 15 years New England has more wins than any other NFL franchise and that is no accident. If there is one thing that New England head coach Bill Bellichick has proven it is that his team adapts and always performs at a high level no matter what. Bellichick made the necessary adjustments when star QB Tom Brady went down last season to guide the team to an 11-5 finish. Quarterback Tom Brady return is the biggest off-season issue in the NFL in 2009 and his return to the starting lineup is huge. This season Bellichick has retooled his offense for Brady with a deep core of receivers and a new running back in Fred Taylor. Look for the Patriots to win the AFC East and make another trip to the 2010 Superbowl.

New England’s offense has many different looks and schemes that Tom Brady has complete mastery of. Brady may have less mobility after his surgery and it is yet to be seen how he reacts to a live pass-rush with his patched up wheel. Lucky for Brady wideouts Randy Moss, Wes Welker and Joey Galloway form one of the trios in the NFL. Competition for the starting RB position will be held between Fred Taylor, Laurence Maroney, Sammy Morris and Kevin Faulk. Faulk is the most versatile, Taylor is the most established and Maroney has the most upside. The O-Line is a blue-collar group that is still above-average but a little vulnerable off the edges in pass protection.
New England’s defense is a little long in the tooth but is still good enough to be a top-10 unit. The Patriots 8th ranked defense from a year ago could actually be even better with new additions added in free-agency and the draft. The D-Line is arguably the best in the NFL with pocket collapsing DT Vince Wilfork leading the charge. The linebackers in the Patriots scheme are depended on to provide a pass-rush and this could be a breakout year for last season’s #1 pick ILB Jerod Mayo. Mayo was the NFL Defensive Rookie Of The Year and will need to pick up the slack for departed playmaker Mike Vrabel. Consistent CB Shawn Springs was added to bolster a deep secondary with a couple of talented safeties in Brandon Merriweather and James Sanders. New England’s special teams boasts a pro-bowl kicker in Stephen Gostowski from a well-rounded unit.
