Patriots Redskins Line

The New England Patriots will go for their fifth straight win this Sunday when they visit the struggling Washington Redskins. The Patriots held on for a 31-24 win over the winless Colts to improve to 9-3 on the season. New England sits comfortably ahead of the Jets in the AFC East, but are tied with Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Houston for the AFC’s best record. As for the Redskins, they allowed 21-points in the final 7 minutes of the fourth quarter to lose 19-34 at home to the Jets. It was Washington’s seventh loss in eight games.
Taking a look at the week 14 lines, oddsmakers currently have the Patriots favored by 8-points over the Redskins with the total set at 47.5 points.
New England Patriots:
Head coach Bill Belichick won’t be happy with the way his team allowed a winless team to fight back after his Patriots went into the fourth quarter with a 31-3 lead. While some teams will call off the dogs, New England is not one of those teams. Either way I wouldn’t look too much into the Colts 4th quarter rally.New England isn’t going to be happy about what happened, but a win is a win, and no team does a better job of putting their complete focus on the next game.
Tom Brady threw for 289 yards and two touchdowns on 29 of 38 passing. Both touchdown strikes went to tight end Rob Gronkowski, who also scored a touchdown on a 2-yard run. Gronkowski two scores has him tied with Antonio Gates and Vernon Davis for the NFL single-season record with 13. With four games left to play, I think it’s pretty safe to say he will have the record all to himself.
Wes Welker also had a big day catching the football, as he hauled in 11 passes for 110 yards. Welker now has 19 catches for 225 yards and two scores since being held to just two catches against Kansas City back in week 11.
The most surprising thing from that game was the fact that New England managed just 73 rushing yards on 24 attempts. The Colts are well-known for their struggles against the run, and Belichick and the Patriots usually exploit opposing teams weaknesses. However, with the success they were having throwing the ball, you can’t really blame them for not running it.
The Redskins come in with the 9th ranked pass defense, but even the best defenses will struggle against Brady and the Patriots. The interesting thing to watch for in this game, is the fact that Washington hasn’t allowed an opposing team to throw for more than 264 yards all season. Brady comes into the game averaging 326.3.
Washington Redskins:
It looked as though the Redskins were headed for a second straight win, but this team completely fell apart in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. Washington took a 16-3 lead with 7:52 play on 46-yard field goal from Graham Gano. The lead didn’t last long. New York scored two touchdowns in just over a minute to take a 27-16 lead. After Gano kicked another field goal to bring Washington within 8-points, New York would seal the deal with a 25-yard touchdown run from Shonn Greene.
The Redskins outgained the Jets 304 to 266 in total yards, but turnovers and their inability to finish drives with touchdowns doomed them in this game. Washington went 82 yards in eight plays to open the game with a touchdown, but would have to settle for four field goals the rest of the way.
Helu had another big game for the Redskins, rushing for 100 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries, while also catching four passes for 42 yards. Helu did have a costly fumble, but the reason the Redskins lost this game was the horrible play of Rex Grossman. While he threw for 221 yards, Grossman completed just 19 of 46 attempts with an interception and a fumble.
Luckily for the Redskins, Grossman should have a much easier time throwing the ball against the Patriots on Sunday. New England is dead last in the NFL against the pass, allowing 310 yards a game. They just allowed the Colts Dan Orlovsky to throw for 353 yards and two scores on 30 of 37 passing. It was Orlovsky’s first start of the season. The question is whether not the Redskins can do enough offensively to win this game.
Betting Trends:
New England is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games as a road favorite of 3.5-10.0.
Washington is 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a double-digit loss at home.
Got something to say?
