Chris Paul 2008-09 NBA MVP Predictions

Written January 25, 2009 by Jason Lowry

Chris Paul

It’s that time of the NBA season to start talking about who the 2008-09 regular season MVP is going to be. While no one has the award locked up by any means, there are just a handful of guys that really have a chance to win. At the half way mark it is pretty safe to say that LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, and Dwayne Wade are easily the front runners, but a big 2nd half run could put a number of players like Paul Pierce, Dirk Nowitzki, and Tim Duncan into the mix. We are going to put our focus on arguably the best point guard in the game right now, Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets. In just his 4th season in the league Paul has become the dream point guard that every team would love to have on their team. He led the Hornets to the No. 2 seed last year, and though they lost to the Spurs in the Western Conference Semi-finals, everyone got a good glimpse of what’s to come from Paul and the Hornets. The Hornets have had high expectations coming into the season, and though they aren’t wowing anybody with their 26-14 record, they are just two games back of the Spurs in the Southwest Division, and currently hold the 4th best record in the Western Conference. To help you have an idea at why Paul is in consideration for the MVP, we are going to take a closer look at his numbers this season, and I will give you my thoughts on his chances of winning the award.

Paul like so many of the greats in this game, has exploded into the spotlight, and after putting up solid numbers his first two seasons, he comes into this season after a 2007-08 campaign where he averaged a double-double, as he dropped 21.1 points and 11.6 assists a game on opposing teams. This year it’s been much of the same, as Paul is averaging 21.2 points a game and exactly 11 assists a game. What makes Paul special, is like Jason Kidd, Paul is an excellent rebounder for his size, as he is averaging 5.4 rebounds a game this season. Paul is shooting a career best 50% from the field, and has already notched 4 triple doubles this season. Thats not it, Paul leads the league in steals this season, at 2.7 a game, and just recently broke the NBA record for consecutive games with at least one steal, as his record stands at 108 straight games. Either way you look at it, this guy is quickly becoming one of the more dominant players in the game, and it seems like it will be only a matter of time till this guy gets a shot at a ring.

I am a huge Chris Paul fan, as I think he is not only one of the best players in the game, but one of the more entertaining players to watch. Paul like most great point guards isn’t going to lead the league in scoring, but if you look back just a few years Steve Nash won back-to-back MVP awards, and he won because of how much better he made everyone else. Paul is a rare talent, and there is no question that the Hornets would be at the bottom of the West without him. While its hard to compete with Lebron James and Kobe Bryant, I really think this guy needs a ton of consideration for the MVP if he continues to put up numbers like he has all season long.
