Pennington Wants To Remain a Dolphin

Written February 5, 2010 by Jason Lowry

It was an up and down journey for Chad Pennington with the Miami Dolphins, as Pennington came  over from the Jets in 2008 and lead the team to a AFC East division title, only to follow up his performance by playing just 3 games in 2009. On top of that Pennington lost his starting job to the young Chad Henne.

Pennington is set to become a free agent in March, but according to Miami Herald, Pennington wants to remain a Dolphin, even if it means he will be the backup. This is a bit shocking to me, as you expect an NFL player to have the competitive fire to want to start. Pennington is coming off shoulder surgery, and the Dolphins are waiting to see if his arm can hold up and still make the throws needed to be a good quarterback in this league.

A couple other teams that could be interested in Pennington’s services are the Arizona Cardinals and the New York Jets. Pennington would be the backup in New York, but if he lands in Arizona, he could challenge Matt Leinart for the starting job. Either way keep a close eye on where Pennington ends up, as it will have an impact on that teams 2010 NFL odds.

I saw several of the Miami games last season (2008-2009) and was impressed with Pennington (not what I expected when he came from the Jets, but I shouldn’t have doubted Bill Parcells)(but then, Parcells surprised me with Chad Henne too–guess there’s a reason I’m not a GM). I find the Miami Herald story as surprising as you – that’s not the Pennington I’ve seen. I like your idea about Arizona; don’t know that anyone (except maybe Leinart) thinks Leinart is ready (will he ever be?).
