Purdue Boilermakers vs. Penn State Nittany Lions Picks & Odds
Written September 30, 2008 by Jason Lowry

The Purdue Boilermakers take their 2-2 record into one of the toughest places to play, as they head to Penn State to take on the No. 6 Nittany Lions. The Boilermakers are coming off a 17-point loss to Notre Dame in their first road game of the season. On the other hand Penn State comes in riding high after their 38-24 win over then No. 22 Illinois last week to open Big 10 play. The oddsmakers at Sportsbook.com aren’t giving the Boilermakers very little chance in this one as they come in as 13 point underdogs against the Nittany Lions.
The Boilermakers offense had no problem putting up yardage against the Irish last week, but if you are totaling 462 yards of total offense there is no reason you don’t put more than 3 touchdowns on the board. Quarterback Curtis Painter was 29 of 55 for a career high 359 yards and added to scores, but did have one costly interception. While Greg Orton had 9 catches for 90 yards, it was nothing compared to Desmond Tardy’s 10 catches for 175 yards and a TD. It a little unclear why the Boilermakers didn’t try running the ball a little more, as they only ran 17 times for a 103 yards for a 6.1 average. It might be hard for the run game to have that kind of success against the Lions front 7, but it could be the key to pulling off the big upset.

The Boilermakers defense is where the concern comes into play as they gave up 275 yards through the air and over 200 more on the ground. The defense hasn’t had much success since they held Northern Colorado to 10 points in their first game of the season, as they have given up over 31 points a game in the last 3. The Boilermakers defense has to step up this weekend or this one will be over by halftime. Bet Purdue +13 at Sportsbook.com
There really isn’t much to complain about the Nittany Lions offense, as they have one of the most explosive attacks in college football. Penn State comes in averaging nearly 50 points a game (49.8), and it doesn’t look like much can stop them. Quarterback Daryll Clark has completed 63% of his passes on his way to throwing for 896 yards and 9 scores, plus he has ran for 131 and 3 scores as well. The running game has been just as solid, as sophomore Evan Royster leads the way with 518 yards and a ridiculous 7.8 yards per carry. While Jordan Norwood leas the receivers with 318 yards and 4 scores, another receiver really got it going last week in Derrick Williams who scored a 3 touchdowns 3 different ways (rushing, receiving, and kick return). Don’t expect the offense to slow down this weekend against a pretty poor Boilermakers defense.
The Nittany Lions have been just as good as the offense for most of the season, but did have a minor struggle last week was they allowed the Illini to score 14 first points in the first quarter and 24 overall. Quarterback Juice Williams had the best success throwing the ball against this defense as he threw for 183 yards and 2 scores, including strikes from 33 and 54 yards. The Illini’s offense has looked well all season, and its unlikey the Boilermakers have the same success this weekend.
