Phil Mickelson Odds to Win the 2008 Masters

golf

With the Masters set to get underway on Thursday April 10 at Augusta National, we are going to take a look at another one of golf’s greats in Phil Mickelson. Mickelson comes in with the second best odds this weekend behind Tiger Woods to win the first major of the season. Mickelson comes in as the 2nd ranked golfer on the PGA Tour, and should be ready for a good showing at this years Masters. Here is a look at why we think Mickelson can win the tournament, and why we think it will be another year without a green jacket.

Why He Will Win:

Out of the 4 majors the Phil seems to play his best here at Augusta. He had finished in the top 10 eight straight years before coming in tied for 24th last year. During that stretch Phil won this event in 2004 and 2006. Phil is always a big time threat in any tournament that he enters. While 2008 hasn’t been what Phil was hoping for when he started the season, he still has notched a victory at the Northern Trust Open, and a 2nd place finish at the FBR Open. We don’t think that matters too much, as we expect Mickelson to come in firing on all cylinders this weekend. If Phil gets his putter going there is no doubt that he will be sitting there in contention on Sunday afternoon. Expect to see a lot of birdies from Phil as he comes in 7th on the tour in birdie average and 4th on scoring average. Overall Phil is one of your more solid picks this week, if you are looking to go away from Tiger and his not so favorable odds.

Why He Won’t Win:

Phil just hasn’t looked the same this year, and hasn’t really been in contention since his win at the Northern Trust Open back in the middle of February. His best finish since that win was a tie for 20th at the CA Championship 3 weeks ago. While Mickelson has improved both his driving and his iron play as he has pumped both of the categories up from a year ago. What has been the downfall of Phil this season is his putting. He finished up 2007 with the 15th best putting average, but in 2008 he has fallen all the way to 72nd. So if you are looking for a reason to his struggles it starts with the putter. If he doesn’t get it going in Augusta, it could be another long week. Another reason you might want to think twice about taking Phil this week, is that he sometimes struggles with the pressure, and tends to let those behind him stay in contention all the way to the finish. With little confidence going into this tournament, and his shaky putting stroke, it’s a hard play to pick Phil to win this week.
