Philadelphia Eagles at Oakland Raiders NFL Lines

Written October 18, 2009 by Black Widow

The 3-1 Philadelphia Eagles travel to the 1-4 Oakland Raiders Sunday in what is expected to be another lopsided defeat for the home team. The Raiders haven’t even been competitive lately, and they are coming off a 7-44 road loss at the New York Giants. The Eagles are looking for their third straight win after taking care of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at home last Sunday, 33-14. The Eagles are 14-point favorites over Oakland with a Total Set of 40.5 points according to the most recent NFL lines.

Donovan McNabb returned to the lineup last week, and he helped this Eagles’ offense move the ball at will against Tampa Bay. McNabb completed 16-of-21 passes for 264 yards and 3 touchdowns in the win. He returned from a broken rib suffered in the team’s 38-10 season-opening win at Carolina. He got off to a fast start Sunday, rushing for 13 yards on the team’s first offensive play and hitting rookie WR Jeremy Maclin on a 51-yard touchdown pass on their second play from scrimmage. Maclin was McNabb‘s favorite target, catching 6 balls for 142 yards and 2 touchdowns on the day. He was actually the third different receiver in three games to post more than 100 yards receiving, with DeSean Jackson and TE Brent Celek accomplishing the feat in their two previous games. For the season, the Eagles rank second in the league in scoring at 31.8 points/game while racking up 379.5 yards/game of total offense.

The Oakland Raiders have been competitive in two games this season, their 20-24 home loss to the Chargers in Week 1 and their 13-10 road victory over the Chiefs in Week 2. But since then, Oakland has lost 3 straight and they’ve been outscored 96-16 in the process. They have totaled 426 yards of offense in the three losses, which is 57 less than they gave up in last Sunday’s loss to the Giants. It wasn’t until Oakland found itself down 28-0 before the offense finally converted their first 1st-down of the contest. Yeah, it was that bad. Tom Cable has been in the media for his alleged assault on assistant coach Randy Hanson, which certainly has been a distraction. But the Raiders cannot use that as their excuse, and players must find a way to come out and compete every weekend because it’s efforts like theirs that give the NFL a bad reputation. The Raiders have been held to less than 200 yards of total offense in 4 consecutive games. QB JaMarcus Russell has been the biggest culprit, completing just 42.1% of his passes this season with a putrid 47.1 QB rating.
