Philadelphia Phillies at Cincinnati Reds Preview & Pick
Written May 19, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
The World Series Champs are 20-16 on the season. They currently are on a four game winning streak and looking very dominant. While Ryan Howard has eight homers and 28 RBIs and Chase Utley has 10 home runs and 25 RBIs. The major factor this off season has been Raul Ibanez. He has 13 home runs and 35 RBIs while hitting and impressive .357 from the plate. His production has given time to guys that are struggling to improve such as Jimmy Rollins and Jayson Werth. Pitching wise they have been as bad as any team, so far. Tonight Cole Hamels takes the mound and will look to improve his numbers. He is 1-2 through his first six starts with a 5.04 ERA. In his last two starts though he is 1-0 with an under 2.00 ERA. You need not worry about a stud pitcher like this, slow starts happen and he is just coming into form. Last season in two starts against the Reds, Hamels went 2-0 with a 0.56 ERA. In 16 total innings of work he gave up only eight hits. This has miss match written all over it. Expect Howard to explode tonight in a hitters friendly ball park. A two home run night from him is very likely. Victorino will also play a big role. When he gets on base it gives the RBI monsters more at bats. The Phillies are looking good for this game. The MLB lines have been posted for Tuesday and they show the Phillies -132 against the Reds with the total set for 8 runs.
The Cincinnati Reds are 20-17 on the season. However, they are headed in the opposite direction then their opponent. The Reds are on a three game losing streak and seem to be coming back down to earth. Jay Bruce has 11 homers and 23 RBIs but is only hitting .230 from the plate. Joey Votto is hitting .366 from the plate but has struggled largely with his power swing, as he has five homers and 27 RBIs. Brandon Phillips does have six homers and 27 RBIs but has been inconsistent.. After those three there are no threats on this team. On the pitching side, the Reds haven’t been all that bad. Tonight’s Starter is Johnny Cueto, who has been nothing short of fantastic. He has a 4-1 record with a 1.93 ERA. He has gone seven or more innings in his last five starts. So, this is why the betting line is as low as it is. I urge you folks, do not let a hot start blind side consistency. In order for The Reds to win this game they will need to score more runs then they have been lately. Going up against Hamels is a handful. The better pitcher is on Philly along with the better hitting. Easy pickings.
Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Phillies are the best road team in baseball. in their last 29 road games they are 21-8. In the last 64 games Philadelphia has played on a grass field, they are 43-21. The Reds are currently on a three game losing streak. Cueto has been fantastic for them, but tonight he meets his maker. In the head to head match up between these two teams, the Phillies are 8-13 in the last 11 meetings. The bang for your buck here is off the charts phenomenal. PHILLIES BEST BET, period.
Jordan’s Pick: Philadelphia Phillies -132 (BEST BET)
Last night was border line comical. As we enter the fourth inning looking solid in our BEST BET UNDER between the Dbacks and Marlins, the rain comes down and forces them to postpone the game. The Dodgers win by only one run as Tim Redding seemed to have owned them after the first inning. But, it seems to be a sudden rain storm is the only way I can be contained right now. So without further delay, lets get cracking.
