Pittsburgh at Rutgers College Football Odds

The Pittsburgh Panthers travel to Rutgers to take on the Scarlet Knights in a Big East clash Friday, October 16th. The Scarlet Knights have had head coach Dave Wannstedt’s number, going 4-0 against Pittsburgh since he took over the job in 2005. It’s the only Big East team he hasn’t beaten, but the books feel this will be the year that the Panthers get the job done. That’s indicated by the NCAA football odds makers who have listed Pittsburgh -5 over Rutgers with a Total Set of 45.5 points.
The Panthers look to overcome the ghosts of the past and end their 4-game losing streak to Rutgers this Friday. Pittsburgh has started the season 5-1 with some big wins along the way against the likes of Navy, Buffalo, Louisville and Connecticut. They did lose to NC State by a final of 31-38 on the road, but they blew a big second half lead to the Wolf Pack for their only loss of the season. Freshman running back Dion Lewis will be up against a stingy rush defense from Rutgers, so QB Bill Stull will have to try and win it through the air against a weak Scarlet Knights’ secondary. Stull is averaging 209 passing yards/game with 13 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. His line has done a very good job of protecting him, allowing just 4 sacks in six games. Lewis has rushed for 738 yards for an average of 123.0/game with 7 touchdowns.

True freshman QB Tom Savage makes his fourth start of the season for the Scarlet Knights Friday after missing the Florida International game and the Maryland contest with a concussion. Rutgers is off to a 4-1 start this season, with their lone loss a 15-47 setback to Cincinnati in the opener. Protecting Savage will be the biggest key for Rutgers, as their offensive line has given up 14 sacks in 5 games. The Panthers average over 4 sacks/game and they are ranked third in the country at taking down opposing quarterbacks. But Rutgers relies mostly on the run, and they will need to move the football on the ground to slow down these Pitt pass-rushers. Rutgers is averaging 183 rushing yards/game and allowing just 65 yards/game on the ground this season. Rain is in the forecast, so who runs the ball better may decide the outcome if it gets too sloppy. There’s no doubt the Scarlet Knights have played a weaker schedule than Pittsburgh, so they have a lot to prove Friday night.
