2011 Pittsburgh Steelers Schedule
Written by Steve Janus
Heading into the 2010-11 NFL season there were few that were giving the Pittsburgh Steelers much of a chance to even make the playoffs with starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger suspended for the first four games. The Steelers managed to go 3-1 without Roethlisberger and then continued to roll to a 12-4 finish, which landed them the AFC North title and a first round bye in the playoffs. Pittsburgh put together two tough wins over the Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets to get back to the Super Bowl for a third time in the last six years. However, they were unable to come away with the Lombardi Trophy, falling to the Green Bay Packers 25-31.
With a defense that is as good as any in the league, the Steelers figure to be one of the top teams again this season. To get a better idea of how this team will fair during the 2011-12 season, lets take a look at their regular season schedule. On top of the Steelers six games against the AFC North, they will take on the AFC South, NFC West, Kansas City Chiefs, and New England Patriots.
Pittsburgh went 5-1 against their division rivals last season. Sweeping both the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals, while splitting their two games against the Ravens. That 5-1 finish was the difference in the Steelers getting the first round bye, as the Ravens also finished 12-4 but were 4-2 in the division. I don’t think the Steelers will do any worse than 3-3, but another 5-1 mark against the North would likely land them a second straight division title.
In the Steelers four games against the AFC South they have to go on the road to take on the Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans, while getting the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans at home. No question Pittsburgh will be favored in their two home games, but both road games could provide a big challenge. Anything less than a 2-2 mark against this division would be a major disappointment.
Pittsburgh has to like their chances against the weak NFC West this season. This division didn’t even have a team finish over .500 last year. With the talent Pittsburgh has on both sides of the ball, they should be favored in all four games. They get the Seattle Seahawks and St Louis Rams at home, while having to go on the road to take on the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers. Unless some major moves are made in free agency in this division, I can’t see the Steelers doing any worse than 3-1 against the NFC West.
By winning the North last year the Steelers have to take on the other two division winners outside of the South, and neither game figures to be easy. They have to play the Patriots at home, who beat them at their own place last year 39-26. While the Chiefs aren’t a Super Bowl contender just yet, they were 7-1 at home last year, and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Kansas City came in as the favorite in that game.
