Pittsburgh vs Louisville College Football Odds

Written October 2, 2009 by Black Widow

The Pittsburgh Panthers travel to Louisville to take on the Cardinals Friday in the Big East opener for both teams. This game airs on ESPN 2 at 8:00 EST, so if you bet on college football then you’ll have the opportunity to watch your wagers win. Last year, Pittsburgh trounced Louisville 41-7 at home. There’ no question the Cardinals will be looking to return the favor, but NCAA football odds say the Panthers are supposed to win tonight on the road. They have installed Pittsburgh -6.5 over Louisville with a Total Set of 53 points.

Pittsburgh blew a big lead last week to NC State, losing their first game of the season 31-38 to drop to 3-1 for the year. They’ll have their work cut out for them if they are to bounce back Friday, having not won at Louisville since 1983. The Panthers twice blew leads of 14 points to the Wolf Pack last weekend, and now they’ll have to learn how to finish games. Pittsburgh is having no problem scoring points right now, but they have given up more than 500 total yards in two of their last three games. Coming into the season, their defense was supposed to carry the load while the offense found its way. So far, it’s been the other way around with the offense scoring 37.5 points/game. They have scored points on 20-of-21 trips to the red zone, good for a 95% conversion rate which ranks them 13th nationally. Freshman RB Dion Lewis has filled LeSean McCoy’s shoes very well, already scoring 8 touchdowns in only 4 games.

The Cardinals have certainly been battle-tested in their last two games, losing 27-31 at Kentucky and 14-30 at Utah. It should help them be prepared to face a very good Pitt team Friday, but still coming out on the losing end of both of those games has to be very tough for players to swallow. If they can cut back on the turnovers, where they have coughed it up 7 times through three games, Louisville will have a fighting chance this week. The offense has also been pathetic on third downs, converting just 35 percent of the time at 14-for-40 this season. They aren’t getting it done in the red zone, either, scoring on just 12 of 17 trips inside their opponent’s 20-yard line with only 7 coming in the form of a touchdown. If that’s not enough, then Louisville has averaged 71 penalty yards/game while being flagged 29 times. Fortunately, the defense has stepped up big to make up for their offensive woes. The Cardinals are giving up just 23.7 points/game and 288 total yards/game which is a big reason why they have a chance to pull off the upset tonight, provided the offense is more efficient Friday.
