Pittsburgh vs. West Virginia Football Betting Odds & Spread

Written November 25, 2008 by Jason Lowry

This Friday when the Pittsburgh Panthers host the West Virginia Mountaineers in , it looks like it will be a battle for 2nd in the Big East. West Virginia has a chance to jump league leading Cincinnati, but the Bearcats already beat the Mountaineers earlier this season, so for Mountaineers to take home the automatic bid to the BCS it would need a win over Pitt and South Florida, and a Cincinnati loss to 3-8 Syracuse. Last week the Panthers had their shot at the Bearcats, but fell short 21-28. As for the Mountaineers they were able to head into Louisville and beat up on the Cardinals 35-21. So for those of you looking to do a little football betting this week, the oddsmakers have West Virginia 3.5 point favorites over the Panthers at Bookmaker.com

The Mountaineers are 7-3 on the season, and easily headed to a bowl game, but a strong finish could really help their chances in landing on a New Year’s Day Bowl. Last week against the Cardinals it was all senior quarterback Pat White, who not only threw for 122 yards and 2 scores, but ran for an outstanding 200 yards and 3 scores, including runs from 66 and 43 yards for scores. Noel Devine added another 153 on the ground, as the Mountaineers racked up nearly 500 yards of total offense. The scary part is this team really didn’t play all that well in the 1st half, as they scored just 7 points. Now there is no question its going to be a lot of White again this week against the Panthers, as the Mountaineers rely heavily on their star QB.

The Mountaineers defense did its job, as they never let Louisville climb with 7 points after the Cardinals took an early 7-0 lead. They did give up a bunch of yards in this one, as they Cardinals had nearly 475 yards of total offense in this one, but the Mountaineers defense came up with a number of big plays including 2 fumbles and 3 interceptions that set up a number of Mountaineer points in this one. This week they face a pretty tough Pittsburgh team that has put plenty of points on the board this season, so expect nothing less than a shootout in this one. Bet West Virginia -3.5 at Bookmaker.com

Pittsburgh comes into this one off a pretty tough loss to the Cinny last week, as the Panthers just couldn’t get the offense rolling until the 4th quarter when it was pretty much all said and done. Lesean McCoy was the bright spot for the offense last week, as the running back ran it 17 times for 82 yards and two touchdowns. But the Panthers had a key lost fumble and an interception thrown by Bill Stull, who did have a pretty solid day throwing the football, as he had 229 yards, including a 41 yard strike to Dorin Dickerson for a touchdown. The key this week is not going through a huge dry spell where the offense just simply can’t do much of anything, as you have to think the Mountaineers are going to put plenty of points up in this one.

The Panthers defense started off strong keeping the Bearcats from doing any damage in the 1st quarter, but it was all Bearcats in the 2nd and 3rd quarters as Tony Pike threw for 3 scoring touchdowns, as he torched the Panthers secondary for 309 yards on the day. The Panthers were pretty solid against the run giving up just 87 yards on 38 carries, and they better be ready for a heavy dose of running plays this weekend, as the Mountaineers use a number of different ways to get White and Devine the football. There is no question the Panthers have the talent to win this game at home, its just a matter of will they come ready to play after losing their shot at a conference title last week.
