2009 Players Championship Predictions

Written by

Mickelson Players ChampionshipThe Players Championship is considered by many the top golf tournament, thats not a major, so you can expect a field full of the best players in the world, as they compete for the highest prize pool of the season. Last year it was Sergio Garcia who came out on top, but don’t expect a repeat, as no player has been able to accomplish the feat since the tournament started up in 1974. Besides all the big names that come to play at TPC at Sawgrass, this tournament has arguably one of the best par 3′s of any course on the PGA Tour. No. 17, aka the “Green Island” is easily the signature hole of this course, as golfers are forced to hit a small green surrounded by water, and the fact that is just 1 hole from the finish, makes for a very interesting final round, as no lead is safe with this hole to play. The problem about this tournament, is its so hard to predict who is going to come out on top. It really doesn’t matter what you have done here in the past, as this course can make you a champion one year, and send you home packing for the weekend the next. With that said, here is a look at the 3 guys I like to play well this weekend at the Players Championship.

Phil Mickelson +1000 to win: I know Tiger is in the field, and if there is anything I want, it’s a Woods Mickelson showdown this weekend, but if I had to choose just one guy to play better this weekend, I think its Phil. Mickelson won this event two years ago in 2007, and has finished in the top 25 here in 4 of his last 5 starts. Mickelson is coming off a solid final round at Quail Hollow that ended up landing him a tie for 5th. The one concern facing Mickelson this weekend, is he hasn’t been as good around the greens as we are use to seeing, and that is a part of his game that he will really need to be going this weekend. I think Phil responds to the task, and is right in the thick of things come Sunday Afternoon.

Sean O’Hair +2500 to win: O’Hair is quietly having a really good start to the 2009 season, but it won’t be so quiet if he is able to pull off another win this weekend. O’Hair grabbed his first win of 2009 last week at the Quail Hollow Championship, after barely missing out on a win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational earlier this season where Tiger Woods came from way behind to steal the win. In fact O’Hair has finished 25th or better in all but one start this season, and is playing as good as golf as anyone right now. O’Hair is 12th in total driving, 5th in greens in regulation, and 34th in putting average, so its pretty easy to see why this guy has been finishing so well this season. In my opinion O’Hair is a steal at +2500, and it won’t be long before this guys odds become much more comparable to the favorites week in and week out.

Boo Weekley +5000 to win: Here is my value pick for the tournament this weekend, as you get outstanding odds for Weekley to win this tournament. Weekley has really got it going after missing the cut at the Masters, as he had back to back 13th place finishes at the Verizon Heritage and Zurich Classic, and then followed it up with a tie for 11th last week at Quail Hollow. Weekley is 5th in total driving, and 50th in greens in regulation this season, and I just feel like this guy is ready to break out and come away with a big win. Weekley finished tied for 22nd here last year, and had he not shot +5 in the final round, he would of been right in the thick of things. If value is what you are looking for than forget the big names and take Weekley as the man to win this weekend.
