Point Spreads for Every Super Bowl
The New England Patriots are currently 11-point favorites against the New York Giants, but betting fans are wondering how much it may change before the game. When Vegas first learned of the match-up they set the line at 14, and in just one week it has dropped 3 points. There is still one week till the two teams take the field, and fans might see another drop in the line. We don’t see the line moving much more from where it’s at, but if Brady’s injury becomes more severe the line would drop dramatically. Many think that if the Giants win next weekend it would be the biggest upset in Super Bowl History.
Those who have bet on previous Super Bowls know that a team favored by 11-points is not the biggest margin seen before. If you go back to 2002 when New England took on the St Louis Rams, at kick-off the Patriots were 14-point underdogs. So we decided to take a look at every Super Bowl and see what kind of spreads there have been. Below is a table that lists the spreads and winners from each Super Bowl ever played.

So you can easily see that there have been 13 games where the spread has been in double-digits. 8 times the favorite came out on top, losing 5 times, and pushing once. The biggest upset by point spread came back in Super Bowl III, when The New York Jets defeated the Baltimore Colts after coming into the game as 17-point underdogs. The safe bet is always on the favorite, but the Patriots are facing a red-hot Giant team that will take their perfect road record to the test. A couple interesting points to think about are. These same two teams played just a few weeks ago and the Patriots only won that game by three points. Another interesting thing is where this game is going to be played, the Patriots were destroying teams when the weather was warm, and once it went cold so did their ability to cover the huge Vegas spreads.
The reason people are saying that this year’s game could be the biggest upset is because they Patriots are undefeated. No team has ever finished the season at 19-0, and in a league where teams are suppose to be more evenly balanced than other sports, makes this feat something of special importance. So if you like the Giants get your bets in now, because we don’t see the line going up. For those of you who think the Patriots are going to win easy, you might want to wait a few days and see if you can’t get a point or two more off the spread.
