You have to prepare differently for tournaments since at any moment you can be knocked out and there is not getting up and taking a break from the action. The most common type of poker tournaments are elimination tournaments. All players begin with the same value of chips, and players continue playing until the champion has everyone’s chips in front of him. As players slowly get eliminated from the tournament, tables consolidate. If there are a significant number of players in the contest, then there is a payout schedule in which you get prize money for placing high. Another popular form of tournament are the rebuy poker tournaments. For a period of time at the start players who lose all of their chips can buy back in and continue playing. You will see more aggressive play early in the tournament as if a player loses all of his chips he will not be eliminated. This type of tournament can generate a lot larger prize pools with this extra rebuy money coming in.
Satellites are normally preliminary tournaments for a much larger event. For example, before the WSOP’s $10,000 entry main event, there are tournaments in which each player posts a smaller amount and the winner of this small tournament earns a seat to the main event.
