Preakness Stakes Odds 2009: Horses to Bet Now or Later
Written by Steve Janus
With the 134th running of the Preakness Stakes scheduled for this Saturday, we wanted to see what horses would be better to bet on now, of if you would be better served waiting until later to maximize your odds on the big race. Here is a look at the field, and our suggestions for betting each horse now or later. Keep in mind that this has less to do with how talented the horses may be, and more to do with the betting public’s perception of each horse. Bet on the Preakness AND get a $500 match bonus when you deposit $500 in a NEW account at BetUS and tell them Betfirms sent you!
1. Rachel Alexandra Ev - There is no doubt you should bet this later. The filly is going off around even money right now, but come race day, I think a lot of bettors will realize this is a much tougher field, and you will be able to get much better odds at that time. Recommendation: Bet Later
2. Mine That Bird – 7/2 - Coming off of the Kentucky Derby win have given Mine That Bird favorite-like odds right now at the racebook, but come Saturday, I firmly believe that bettors will shy away, simply because there are so many questions about him. He was, after all, a 50 to 1 shot in the Derby. Recommendation: Bet Later
3. Pioneerof The Nile – 5/1 - He ran very well in the Kentucky Derby, finishing 2nd, running in the mud on his first race ever on dirt. If you can lock him in at 5/1 or better, do it now as the odds are likely to fall closer to 3/1 by post. Recommendation: Bet Now
4. Musket Man – 7/1 - Some bettors will back Musket Man after looking at his running line of 5 victories in 7 career races. This line looks about right at 7/1, but you may want to lock it in now just to be safe. Recommendation: Bet Now
5. Papa Clem – 7/1 - Also ran well at the Derby, keeping pace despite swinging wide in the mud. 7/1 is as good as you’ll get. If he’s your horse, jump on him now. Recommendation: Bet Now
6. Friesan Fire – 7/1 - There were a lot of horse racing experts that picked Friesan Fire to win the Kentucky Derby. His 19th place finish there should keep the action on him to a minimum, and hopefully drive the odds up in your favor. Recommendation: Bet Later
7. General Quarters – 10/1 - He did not look good at all in the Kentucky Derby, which normally means his Preakness odds will only continue to rise. Against this competition I can easily see the odds jumping to 15/1 or 20/1 by post time. Recommendation: Bet Later
8. Big Drama 16/1 – Big Drama has great speed out of the gates, but most front-runner backers will probably be on Rachel Alexandra, so expect Big Drama’s odds to move in your favor. Recommendation: Bet Later
