Pre-Race Odds/Payouts:
The Preakness Stakes goes off this weekend at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. This is the second jewel of the Triple Crown and 2012 marks the 137th running of this prestigious event. With only 11 horses set to run, this field looks more predictable than most of the Run for the Black-Eyed Susans in year’s past. I’ll Have Another won the Derby at 13/1 odds, and he is the second favorite at 5/2. Derby runner-up Bodemeister is the favorite at 8/5.
With a small field featuring great favorites, the potential of a big payout is unlikely. However, if a longshot does comes in, then your chances of cashing in big on an Exacta or a Trifecta go way up. These are two of the most popular wagers in horse racing. With an Exacta, you have to correctly predict which two horses will finish first and second in the exact order. A successful Trifecta wager would mean that you correctly picked the top three horses in the exact order.
Just last year in the 2011 Preakness Stakes, a $2 Exacta paid $114.80 and a $2 Trifecta netted bettors $1,401.80. Shackleford, Animal Kingdom and Astrology finished in first, second and third, respectively. To keep it simple, I’m going to give you the payouts on every contender if they were to win at the current odds as of Thursday, May 17.
Bodemeister (8/5) – The runner-up at the Kentucky Derby holds a 5-2-3-0 career race record. A $2 wager would net you $5.20 and a $100 bet would bring back $260 if Animal Kingdom were to win.
I’ll Have Another (5/2) – The winner of the Kentucky Derby owns a 6-4-1-0 career record. A $2 wager pays you $7 and a $100 wager nets you $350.
Creative Cause (6/1) - The fifth place finisher at the Derby holds a 9-4-2-2 career record and is as consistent a horse as you will find. A $2 bet earns you $14 and a $100 wager brings you $700.

Daddy Nose Best (12/1) - This horse finished 10th in the Derby and owns a 11-4-2-1 career record. A $2 wager gets you $26 and a $100 bet earns you $1300.
Teeth of the Dog (15/1) – This horse didn’t run in the Derby and has an impressive 4-1-1-2 career mark. Good value here on a solid horse as a $2 wager pays back $32 and a $100 bets gets you $1600.
