2009 Preakness Stakes Post Positions

Written by

2009-preakness-stakes-post-postionsThe 134th Preakness Stakes drew for post positions Wednesday night just after 5 PM.  This year’s favorite, filly Rachel Alexandra, will be the last to load in the 13th position.  You may remember Rachel Alexandra from this year’s Kentucky Oaks, a race in which she blew away the competition, winning by more than 20 lengths.  Riding high from the buzz of that win, she will likely remain the favorite up to post time.

This year’s Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird drew post 2, and is currently listed at 9-2 odds to win the Preakness.  Mike Smith has been named to ride him instead of his Derby rider, Calvin Borel, who will be riding Rachel Alexandra.

Pioneerof the Nile is one of the favorites in this year’s Preakness after a second-place showing in the Kentucky Derby, and will break from post 9 with jockey Garrett Gomez riding.

Friesan Fire was the favorite at the Kentucky Derby this year, but finished 18th.  He drew post position 5 and will be ridden by his Derby jockey, Garrett Gomez.

Big Drama was already projected to be the pacesetter before the post positions were drawn.  With Big Drama drawing the rail at post position 1, he will almost certainly get out early and set the pace.
