Purdue 2009 Football Predictions

Written June 20, 2009 by InfoPlays

Purdue-2009-Football-PredictionsWhile new head coach Danny Hope plans to use the spread offense that former head coach Joe Tiller had so much success with, the lack of experience at quarterback and wide receiver will be difficult to overcome. The Boilermakers need some unknowns to come through on offense, and they need the experienced defense to be better than a year ago. But we foresee no major change from last season’s 4-8 record. As we take a look at the NCAA football odds for futures betting we find the Boilermakers listed at +8000 to win the Big Ten Championship in 2009.

Offense: Hope takes over an offense that lost its starting quarterback, running back and top two wideouts. Curtis Painter threw for 2,400 yards last season, and Kory Sheets rushed for 1,131 yards. Greg Orton caught 69 passes for 720 yards and Desmond Tardy had 67 receptions for 876 yards. The Boilermakers suffered another setback when sophomore QB Justin Siller was suspended from the university through the 2009-10 academic year for violating the school’s academic policy. Now fifth-year senior Joey Elliot should man the starting job after playing in 10 games in his career behind Painter, but never making a start.

The wide receiver situation is a major concern. Keith Smith and Aaron Valentin are the team’s only experience pass catchers. Senior Jaycen Taylor is coming off knee surgery but he’s a proven talent after serving as Sheets’ backup in 2006 and ‘07. Kyle Adams also missed time last season with a knee injury, but he’s an all-around tight end who should be used heavily in the passing game. Four starters return on the offensive line in Zach Reckman, Zach Jones, Ken Plue and Eric Hedstrom. Also, Jared Zwilling and Justin Pierce have experience.

Defense: With seven returning starters, the Purdue Boilermakers will rely heavily on their defense to start the season. Tackle Mike Neal, end Ryan Kerrigan, athletic linebackers and an experienced secondary pave the way. The secondary consists of four seniors who had starting roles at some point last year. Brandon King and David Pender man the corners, while Torri Williams and Dwight McLean are at safety. Kerrigan, a junior, is being touted the next in line of outstanding ends at Purdue. He finished with 56 tackles, including 11.5 for a loss and 7 sacks last season.

The development at linebacker will be a key to the defense. Joe Holland makes the switch from safety to backer. Chris Carlino played in every game, starting five as a true freshman. Both Holland and Carlino showed they have the potential to be stars. Jason Werner missed last season with back problems, but when healthy he’s the team’s best linebacker and one of its top athletes.
