Purdue at Minnesota College Football Odds

Written October 7, 2009 by Kyle Hunter

This Saturday the Purdue Boilermakers will travel to Minnesota to take on the Gophers in a Big 10 conference battle. It seems these two teams might be headed in different directions right now as the Gophers have turned things around from being cellar dwellers and Purdue has fallen from contender down toward the bottom of the Big 10. The Gophers enter at 3-2 and Purdue enters this game at just 1-4 on the season.  Just a reminder that the best deal going for this college football betting season is the $500 match bonus you can pick up at BetUS!

Purdue started the season out just fine, handling Toledo 52-31 in their home opener, but since then things have been all downhill. Purdue has lost twice as home favorites to Northern Illinois and Northwestern. Those teams from the northern part of Illinois must not be very friendly to Purdue! Included in the four game losing skid is also the heartbreaking loss to Notre Dame, where Purdue made a great effort to come back and take the lead, only to lose in the final seconds. Turnovers have hurt the Boilermakers in a big way, and the running game that started the season so strong has also turned south. The Boilermaker defense is giving up about 30 points per game, largely due to its problems stopping the run and keeping teams out of the end zone. The offense needs to take care of the ball and the defense needs to be able to get off the field and force some field goal attempts.

Minnesota’s season has gone pretty well, but they sure wish they could have pulled out last weekend’s game against the Wisconsin Badgers. Minnesota’s two losses on the season have come to Cal and Wisconsin at home. Adam Weber is a very talented quarterback that can hurt other teams with his arm and his feet, but he has 6 interceptions on the year as well. Eric Decker is one of the best receivers in the country and he is a huge weapon for the offense. The defense has been improving greatly, but they can be gashed by physical runners as John Clay of Wisconsin showed just last week. The Gophers need to continue to get used to their new pro style offense and control the football to keep improving throughout the season.

The Gophers opened as 4 point favorites at home, but the number has settled back to 3.5 points according to the latest college football odds. The total on this game is being posted at 53 points. The two teams have conflicted trends on over/under data. In Purdue’s last 54 conference games the under is 38-16. In Minnesota’s last 44 home games the over is 30-13-1.

Both teams will be able to score points in this game, so it will be up to the defenses to try their best to keep the opponent out of the end zone. I expect Minnesota’s offensive weapons to have a pretty big game against a below par Purdue defense. If Minnesota can stop the run at all, they will likely win this game and cover. Considering the fact that Minnesota beat Northwestern at Northwestern and Purdue lost to them at home last week I think -3.5 is a pretty good spot to take the Gophers in this one.
