Purdue v. Washington NCAA Basketball Spreads

Written March 21, 2009 by Jack Jones

Purdue Washington Basketball PreviewThe only matchup with a No. 4 seed taking on a No. 5 seed on Saturday takes place out in the West Region in a game between the Washington Huskies and the Purdue Boilermakers.  WagerWeb odds makers have opened up the Huskies as a one-point favorite over Purdue.  The close location to their home campus with the game being played in Portland could be the reason the slight edge is being given to Washington.

The Boilermakers continued their domination on Thursday when they took care of Northern Iowa, 61-56, in a game that really wasn’t as close as the score would indicate.  That makes it 11 straight tournament opener wins for Purdue, plus the team has won fourth victory in a row after crusing through the Big Ten Tournament.  The key to the win was the play of guard E’Twaun Moore, who had 17 points after leading the Boilermakers in scoring all year with nearly 14 per contest.  Robbie Hummel had nine points and 12 rebounds to keep up his solid play after being named the MVP of the Big Ten Tournament.  Their 26-9 record gives Purdue more wins this year than the program has notched since going 28-8 back in 1998.

Washington comes in as the No. 4 seed and a record of 26-8.  They have won seven of their last eight games and blew the SEC champions, Mississippi State, out of the water by a score of 71-58 on Thursday.  It was junior forward Quincy Pondexter coming through for the Huskies as he posted 23 points, a career-high, on 9-of-17 shooting.  Jon Brockman added a double-double with 14 rebounds and 10 points.  The dark spot for the Huskies had to be the play of their backcourt as they hit just 7-of-22 from the floor to total 20 points.

If you are looking for some college basketball betting trends for this game you have to like how the Huskies have covered four straight tournament games and six of their last seven in non-conference action.  Purdue on the other hand is just 1-4 ATS in their last five against the Pac-10 and 2-6 ATS in their last eight non-conference.  The Boilermakers are 4-1 ATS though in their last five tournament games as an underdog of less than 6.5 points and 6-2 ATS on neutral floors as an underdog of any amount.
