Rahman vs Maskaev
Written July 23, 2008 by Jack Jones
Rahman vs. Maskaev will go head to head for the WBC heavyweight championship on August 12, 2006. The fight will be held at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
This is an important fight because Rahman holds the last remaining heavyweight belt that is in American hands. If Maskaev is victorious then all of the belts will be held by natives of the former Soviet Union.
This fight is also going to be important to Rahman because he not only wants to defend his belt but revenge a loss suffered to Maskaev back in 1999. Maskaev earned a stoppage in the 8th round after hitting Rahman with a severe overhand right that sent through the ropes and onto the HBO announcer’s table.
Rahman enters this fight as an 11-year pro and at age 33 has seen his good days fly by. Maskaev comes out of Kazakhstan and was a Russian Amateur National Champion who once knocked out Vitali Klitschko in one round.
