Oakland Raiders vs. Denver Broncos NFL Betting Odds & Spread

Written November 20, 2008 by Jason Lowry

There are plenty of rivalries in the NFL, but there might not be two teams that hate each other more than the Denver Broncos and the Oakland Raiders. The Broncos continue to win close games, as they pulled off another big win on the road over the Falcons last week 24-20, and now have a solid two game lead in the AFC West over the Chargers. The Raiders on the other hand continued their losing ways, losing their 4th straight with a 15-17 loss on the road to the Dolphins. Now these two teams hooked up in week 1, with the Broncos offense going off for 41 points, as they killed the Raiders 41-14, and this time they get them on their home turf. If you are looking to do some NFL betting on this one, the oddsmakers have the Broncos 9 point favorites over the Raiders at Bookmaker.com

The Raiders just simply have a hard time throwing the football, as they come in 2nd to last in the league averaging just a little over 155 yards a game, and last week JaMarcus Russell barely got over that mark with 156 yards. Now the running game wasn’t much better as Justin Fargas had just 57 yards on 17 carries, and rookie Darren McFadden could only muster 13 yards on 3 carries. Now this week they go up against a Broncos defense that has been known to give up the big plays and let teams pile on massive amounts of yards, so if this unit is going to have its offensive outburst its going to be against these guys. Now they might of only had 14 points in week 1, but we think they will at least have a little more success scoring the football this week.

Now even if the offense has more success putting points on the board, that doesn’t mean this game will be close. The Broncos offense seems to be clicking at just the right time, and last week this Raiders defense had the game wrapped up if they could made just 1 more defensive stop, but instead the Dolphins had a 10 play 61 yard drive for nearly 4 minutes that set up the game winning field goal for Dan Carpenter and Dolphins with just 38 seconds left in the game. Now the key to stopping the Broncos is stopping Jay Cutler, and that was something they had very little success doing so, as Cutler racked up 299 yards and 2 scores. Its hard to imagine they will get much better playing at Denver this time around. Bet Raiders +9 at Bookmaker.com

Now it hasn’t been easy for the Broncos the last couple of weeks, as they have had to come back in the 4th quarter in both games, and last week Jay Cutler was able to hit Daniel Graham for the go ahead score with just a little over 5 minutes left in the game. Cutler was pretty solid throwing the football, as he racked up 216 yards and that final touchdown, but the real star of the game, was backup running back Petyon Hillis, who stepped in to run the football was power and success, as the back had 10 carries for 44 yards and 2 big touchdowns. Hillis will continue to split carries with the depleted running back group of the Broncos, but this guy is a real bruiser around the goal line, and could be looking at another big day against the Raiders this week. We think a lot of Broncos are going to have big days in this one, and we look for Cutler to get back to hooking up with Brandon Marshall more often, as Marshall hasn’t had a 100 yard game since week 3.

The Broncos defense continues to let the opposing team stick around, but they have been able to pick up their play in the 4th quarter to keep the lead for the offense. Last week they were able to with stand a late drive by rookie Matt Ryan, and they actually did a pretty good job on the rookie all game, as Ryan had 250 yards with no touchdowns and one interceptions. The Falcons running game was a little more impressive in this one, as Michael Turner led the way with 81 yards and 2 scores. This defense can’t afford to let the Raiders stick around this week, as the Broncos could really use this win to secure their spot atop the AFC West. Bet Broncos -9 at Bookmaker.com
