Cable Believes Russell is Reason Raiders Started so Poorly

Written December 29, 2009 by Jason Lowry

The Oakland Raiders are just one game away from the end of yet another disappointing season, as they get ready to take on the Baltimore Ravens in the final week of the season. The Raiders head into the last week at 5-10, and if they fail to win against Baltimore it will be the 7th straight season they have finished with less than six wins.

According to Tim Kawakami, head coach Tom Cable believes that the Raiders would be in the playoff hunt if they did not start the season with JaMarcus Russell as their starting quarterback. The problem is Russell was the No.1 overall pick of owner Al Davis, and it likely that Cable not Russell will get the boot after the season.

While I can understand firing a coach for not putting enough wins on the board, I don’t think Cable deserves to lose his job if he is not allowed to play the players he wants. Hopefully other teams around the league see what Cable had to go through with Davis calling the shots, and will get another shot to coach in the NFL.

In my opinion Russell is one of the biggest draft busts of all time, and I don’t see anyway you can argue putting him back on the field in the future. Russell might have an arm stronger than any other quarterback in the league, but his accuracy is absolutely awful.

If you are looking at the NFL odds for the Raiders/Ravens game this Sunday, the Raiders are getting 10.5 points. Remember back to last season the Raiders were a pretty bad team and wound up shocking the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the final game of the season, knocking them out of the playoffs, and could be poised to do the same against the Ravens.
