Oakland Raiders 2009 NFL Predictions

Written August 21, 2009 by Nick Scarpa

2009 raiders predictionsPsychotic Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis has fired four coaches in the past 4 years, and last year’s Lane Kiffin firing was the biggest circus of all. Oakland has a slew of underachieving, overpriced players that Davis has handpicked. Al Davis has this team in shambles, and his blind faith in QB JaMarcus Russell will again leave this team in the gutter of the mild AFC West divison.

Hall-Of-Fame QB Dan Marino once said that when you play QB in the NFL you know pretty quickly if you are going to be good or not. Some QB’s have the “goods” and some don’t. Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell has some tools, but he doesn’t have the “goods”. Oakland ranked dead last in passing last season despite Davis’s love for throwing the deep ball. Oakland has some speed demons at wideout but few good “ballplayers”. TE Zach Miller has good hands and runs excellent routes, but Russell is one of the most inaccurate passers in the game. The running game has a trio of excellent backs in Darren McFadden, Justin Fargas and Michael Bush. The problem is getting all three enough touches to keep them happy. The O-Line is spotty, but they do a decent job in run blocking.

Oakland annually struggles against the run, often allowing opposing RB’s to waltz into the end-zone virtually untouched. The 4-3 defense rarely blitzes and relies on a mediocre core of linemen to apply pressure. Middle linebacker Kirk Morrison is the leader of the Oakland defense with his vocal presence and playmaking instincts. Alongside Morrison is another talented player in OLB Thomas Howard, who plays sideline to sideline and could have a breakout year. The secondary has a lockdown cover corner in Nnamdi Asomugha. With the rest of the secondary being average, teams rarely even throw to Asomugha’s side of the field. Special Teams are a strength for Oakland with the NFL’s best punter in Shane Lechler.
