St Louis Rams vs. Dallas Cowboys Picks & Predictions

Written October 16, 2008 by Jason Lowry

Editors Note: If you are looking for the winner in the game this weekend between the Cowboys and Rams, check out who professional handicapper Jason Lowry has picked in his week 7 NFL picks package.

After starting the week with talks that Tony Romo would miss a month with a broken pinky, talks have risen that Romo will attempt to play with the injury and start this Sunday for the Dallas Cowboys (4-2) when they head north to take on the St. Louis Rams (1-4). Last week the Cowboys were upset by the Cardinals 24-30 in overtime, and what does owner Jerry Jones do? He trades for Lions star receiver Roy Williams and adds even another weapon to an already loaded offense. On the other hand the Rams went into Washington and shocked the Redskins 19-17. The oddsmakers weren’t fooled by the outcomes last week as the Cowboys still come in 7.5 point favorites over the Rams at BetUS.com

So how much better are the Cowboys with Roy Williams? Thats still up in the air, but one thing we do know is the chances for Patrick Crayton and Miles Austin likely just went way down. There is hope that by adding Williams it will keep teams from loading up on TO and he will be able to make more plays for the Cowboys. A lot of the passing game could come down to if Romo can play, and if he can’t just how good can Brad Johnson be filling in. The thing we think this offense needs to focus on more than anything is the offensive line, as they really struggled at time to keep the Cardinals from getting to Romo. With Felix Jones out look for Barber to get even more of the workload this weekend and take advantage of facing the worst run defense in the league.

As for the Cowboys defense they are now without Adam Jones who is facing at least a 4 game suspension for his latest altercation. With fellow corner Terence Newman out this could mean some more playing time for rookie Mike Jenkins. Its not that the Cowboys defense has playe bad this year, they just seem to let every team stick around and fell to really put teams away. If the Cowboys are unable to contain Steven Jackson this week, they will likely again be in a battle till the end of the game. Bet Cowboys -7.5 at BetUS.com

The Rams really shocked everyone with how they played last week against the Redskins, as Marc Bulger stepped back in the mix and threw for 136 yards, but most importantly got the offense moving and didn’t turn the football over. Steven Jackson ran the ball pretty well, as he piled up 79 yards on 22 carries, and he remains the key to this offense. The Cowboys have been week against the run at times this year, and if Jackson can get going the Rams just might be able to pull off another huge upset.

The real key for the Rams pulling off the big win, is whether or not the defense has enough in the tank to come back this week and stop a Cowboys offense that already ranks 8th in the league at 333 yards a game, and could be even better now that Roy Williams has joined the mix. If Romo is unable to go there is no question that the Cowboys aren’t as good on the offensive side of things, but with the weapons they got it probably wouldn’t be hard for any quarterback to step in and lead that unit.
