Rams Packers Line
Written by Steve Janus
The Green Bay Packers will look to remain unbeaten when they host the St Louis Rams on Sunday. The Packers rallied from a 14-point deficit to beat the Atlanta Falcons 25-14 on Sunday Night Football. Green Bay sits tied at the top of the NFC North with the 5-0 Detroit Lions. The Rams are hoping a week off will get them back on track after starting the season 0-4.
Taking a look at the week 6 NFL spreads, oddsmakers currently have Green Bay favored by 14.5-points over St Louis with the total set at 47.5 points.
St Louis Rams:
It has really been a disappointing start to the season for Rams, who had high expectations of winning the NFC West this season. The schedule has been absolutely brutal to start the season, and it isn’t going to get any easier until they open up division play against Arizona in week 9. After facing the Packers they have to go on the road to take on Dallas and then host New Orleans the following week.
The Rams have really struggled to get the offense going. After four games they are averaging just 11.5 ppg. Sam Bradford hasn’t struggled to get the passing game going, and starting running back Steven Jackson was out for most of the first two games.
Bradford is completing just under 50% of his attempts and is averaging just 183.3 ypg. To his credit he does have just one interception, but has thrown just three touchdown passes. It will be interesting to see if the extra time off will help this team get back on track. Bradford will go up against a Green Bay defense that is allowing just under 300 passing yards a game.
Jackson figures to be back to full strength, but it won’t be easy for the back to put together a big game against a Green Bay defense that is holding opposing teams to just 75.8 rushing yards on average. While St Louis will try and get Jackson going on the ground, their best bet will be to try and find Jackson in the passing game. The Packers have allowed 36 catches to running backs this season.
Green Bay Packers:
It took the Packers a little while to get going last week against Atlanta, but Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay offense came through with another big game. Rodgers threw for 396 yards and two touchdowns, giving him 1,721 yards with 14 touchdowns to just two interceptions on the season.
The most impressive stat for Rodgers in the win over the Falcons was the fact that he completed a pass to 12 different receivers. James Jones led the way with five catches for 140 yards and a touchdown, while Greg Jennings and Jermichael Finley each added four receptions.
While Green Bay had no trouble moving the ball through the air, the Packers managed just 57 rushing yards on 20 attempts. James Starks led the way with 40 yards on 12 carries, while Ryan Grant added just 18 yards on seven attempts. It was the first time this season the Packers were held under 100 yards on the ground, which is a big reason why they scored a season-low 25 points.
This week the Packers face a St Louis defense that is dead last in the NFL against the run, giving up nearly 180 yards per game. The Rams are a respectable 13th against the pass, but have not faced a passing attack anywhere close to what they will see from Rodgers and company. The one thing to keep in mind is the Rams have had two weeks to breakdown what the Packers do offensively, so don’t be surprised if this is a closer game than what the records might indicate.
Betting Trends:
St Louis is 5-13 ATS in their last 18 games as an underdog of 10.5 or greater.
Green Bay is 5-12-2 ATS in their last 19 games as a home favorite of 10.5 or greater.
