MLB Odds & Picks: Tampa Bay Rays at Boston Red Sox

Written May 8, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz

rays-red-sox-picks-050809The Rays are coming off a sweep of the Yankees in the Bronx.. Last nights 8-6 win was highlighted by Carl Crawford and Evan Longoria’s back to back home runs off the great Mariano Rivera. Tampa is 14-16 and currently on a three game winning streak. They head to Boston tonight for a three game series. Carlos Pena leads the league with 13 home runs. He also has 30 RBIs to boot. His partner in crime, Evan Longoria, has been a terror for pitchers this year hitting .368 with 10 home runs and 38 RBIs. Carl Crawford hit the go ahead homer last night and has been baseballs most dangerous base runner. He is hitting .306 and has 20 stolen bases to date which is incredible. Pitching wise, the Rays have not lived up to expectations. Tonight’s starter is James Shields who has been very good this year. He is coming off a start against Boston at home where he picked up a victory going 7.1 innings allowing two runs on six hits. For the year Shields is 3-2 with a 3.51 ERA. Although he pitched very well against the Sox last week, he struggled last season going 2-2 with a 5.85 ERA in four starts. The Rays will need Carl Crawford to get on base tonight like he did all of last series. Easier said then done.

The Boston Red Sox are 18-11 on the season. They are coming off an historical performance last night. Boston scored 12 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning before getting an out. That is a modern day record. This team is clicking on all cylinders. Jason Bay is a stone cold killer from the plate. The Nation has combined for 162 RBIs. Bay has 29, Lowell has 26 and Youkilis has 20. The three of them also combine for six or more home runs. The reigning MVP, Dustin Pedroia, is hitting .316 from the plate and has fielded his position beautifully. Jacoby Ellsbury is hitting .291 and has 15 stolen bases. This is one of the deeper teams in recent memory. When a player goes down, they bring another right up. Tonight though is a big game for them. After dropping three of four in Tampa they want to come out strong tonight. The man who will take the mound is Brad Penny. While his record shows 2-1 in his first five starts, his performance has been far worse as he has a 7.61 ERA. He faced his counter part James Shields last week and he went 6 innings allowing three runs on six hits while striking out eight batters. Boston is the best home team in the American League. When you see these odds, you will start to salivate.

Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Rays are 20-6 in their last 26 Friday games. However, Tampa is 5-12 following a win. The Sox are 16-5 in their last 21 games overall. While the Rays won the series at Boston last week, over the past 63 games in Fenway Park, the Red Sox are 48-15. Shields is 3-9 in his last 12 starts at Fenway as well. This is a gut check game for The Nation. I think coming out firing and reminding Tampa just how dominant they are is important. Oh, did i mention Boston is THE UNDERDOG. Shocking. I for the life of me do not understand why that is. But, I don’t care to find out. Red Sox tonight, BIG.

Friday’s MLB Odds show the Tampa Bay Rays -105/Boston Red Sox -105
