Tampa Bay Rays at New York Yankees Odds & Picks
Written May 6, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
The Rays are 12-16 on the season and that’s something nobody would expect. This team plays with extreme confidence and every analyst is just waiting for them to break out. Well, hold the phones, I’d say to those folks. Although it is early, Tampa is 6.5 games back of Toronto and 5.5 back of Boston already. The pitching staff they have counted on has been on and off while the hitting comes from two players in Carlos Pena, who leads the AL in homers, and Evan Longoria who is just on a tear. They are coming off a series win at Baltimore. Tonight’s starter is Andy Sonnanstine, who has been an utter disappointment to start this season. He is 1-3 through his first five starts with a 6.75 ERA. However, one of those starts came against The Yankees as he went five innings allowing only two runs on four hits. Last season Sonnanstine got rocked by the Yankees. He happened to go 1-0 in two starts but had an ERA of 10.61 combined. He will look to get help from Carlos Pena, who is tearing the cover off the ball with 11 home runs and 28 RBIs. His partner in crime, Evan Longoria, is just as dominant hitting eight home runs with 34 RBIs while hitting .365 from the plate. This is a perfect situation for the Rays to come out and pounce on the Yanks. Let’s see how this plays out. Wednesday’s MLB odds show the Yankees -157 against the Rays with a total set for 10 runs.
Well, well, well. How the mighty have fallen. The Yankees take the field at home tonight after getting used and abused again by Boston, who just finished off yet another sweep. This teams hitting is spotty at best while their pitching starting rotation is mediocre. You can throw all the big names out their you’d like. If numbers aren’t produced, the names mean nothing. The bullpen is a laughing stock as it will make it very difficult to have confidence betting on this team. Also, injuries, are not an excuse. A team that spends 400+ million dollars on four players should have the resources to make up for it. They decided to sign Posada to a multi year deal, that mistake is on them. So no excuses, we don’t want to hear them. With those negatives stated, a bright spot has been Robinson Cano who looks to be back to his all-star caliber self hitting .336 with five home runs and 17 RBIs. Nick Swisher has seven home runs and 19 RBIs, he has seemed to cool off as of late. Damon is coming up with big hits and those will be needed very badly as the year goes on. Tonight’s starter is A.J. Burnett, who will get his first start as a Yankee in a must-win mentality game. He needs to come out and stop the bleeding, or at least put some gauze on it. Burnett is 2-0 through five starts with a 5.40 ERA. The earned run average is misleading though as it has been inflated by his one start at Boston when he got bombed. Hold your ears Yankee fans, the key for this team tonight will be their, BULLPEN. The Rays are a great come from behind team, this pen must come up with big innings if needed tonight. Now, stating that and putting your pocket cash on that are two different things.
Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Rays are 1-7 in their last eight games following a win. The Yankees are 53-20 in their last 73 Wednesday games. New York is also 14-6 in their last 20 home games while also going 17-8 in their last 25 games when they are deemed the favorite. The UNDER is 6-2 in the last eight meetings between these two teams. The Yankees offense have struggled while the staff has been pretty decent against every team except the Red Sox. The Rays have two players that are crushing the ball and seven others who have been average at best. Look for both pitchers to perform well and I see this game being as close as possible. So with that said we will do something we did earlier in the year which worked out well. Look below and read carefully.
Betting Line: New York Yankees -165/Tampa Bay Rays +145 & O/U 10 Runs
Jordan’s Picks: Tampa Bay Rays +1.5 Runs (-135) & UNDER 10 Runs
Wow, that’s a bad beat and at a bad time. The White Sox were up 5-1 and 7-3 in two different spots last night as we were sitting pretty to cash in. Then the bullpen arrives and costs us big time. Unfortunately things like this happen especially in baseball considering the length of the season. We have a nice card of games tonight as we look to hit big. Our profit margins still sit sky high as these bad breaks are nothing more than that.

Lol, Jack is the main man but i see this total differently. I see Burnett pitching well but the Yanks just don’t have the offense to boot. The line is sheerly off the name and reputation. I defend my girl here, I think shes a great choice
GL tonight, we look to be set up for some big wins
