2011 RBC Candian Open Predictions

Written by -

After a thrilling week at Royal St. George, where Darren Clarke finally broke through with his first major win, the PGA Tour will head to Vancouver this week for the 2011 RBC Candaian Open. The tournament will be head at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club, who are celebrating their 100th anniversary this year. This will be the fourth time the course has been used for this event, with the last coming in 2005.

Carl Pettersson outlasted the field at this event in 2010, taking home the trophy with a 14-under 266 at St. George. The scoring doesn’t figure to be so friendly this week at Shaughnessy, where Mark Calcavecchia won with a 5-under 275 in 2005. In fact, only nine players in all finished under par for the tournament. Shaughnessy was the toughest non-major event on tour that year, despite ideal weather for pretty much the entire tournament. That should add up to another tough week of golf for those that are making the trip.

One positive is this course has seen quite a bit of rain over the weekend, which will allow players to take more direct attack at the pin locations. While anyone in the field could emerge this week, players who excel at getting the ball from tee to green in regulation will be the ones who have the best chance at taking home the win. With so few birdies expected to be made, players who can scramble around the greens and avoid making bogeys should also have a solid showing.

For those of you looking to make a bet on the RBC Canadian Open, here is a look at three golfers who I feel have the best shot at holding up the trophy this weekend.

Matt Kuchar (+1000) – Kuchar didn’t fair well at all last week at the British Open, and wound up snapping his streak of 29 straight cuts made. While the poor finish will have some backing off Kuchar, when you look at what this guy has done this season, you can see why he is one of the favorites to win. Kuchar has eight top 10 finishes in 16 starts this season. He played well at this event in 2005, finishing tied for 14th, and is currently 3rd on the TOUR in bogey avoidance.

Ryan Moore (+2000) – Moore comes in at pretty good value this week. He has proven he has the game to play well at this course, finishing tied for 2nd at Shaughnessy back in 2005.  He has came close to bringing home a win in two starts this season, finishing tied for 4th at the Northern Trust Open and tied for 2nd at the Travelers Championship. While he ranks just 144th in greens in regulation, he is 10th in putts  per round and 26th in scrambling.

Ben Crane (+5000) – Crane was the other player who finished tied for 2nd at the 2005 RBC Canadian Open, and at +5000 he is definitely worth a look this week. Crane hasn’t been much of a factor of late, finishing 45th or worse in each of his last seven starts. That strong finish here in 2005 will give him a ton of confidence going into this event, which is what he needs to get things turned around. Crane is currently 16th in driving accuracy, 76th in green in regulation, and 15th in scrambling. If he can get off to a good start, there is a very good chance he will be right there with a shot to win on Sunday.
