Red Sox at Nationals Picks & Betting Odds
Written June 23, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
Boston is the class of the AL East as they currently sit four games ahead of the Yankees with a 42-27 record. The Nation is 7-3 in their last 10 games and have showed why they are so dangerous. They hit as well as any one and their bullpen is stronger then all. Now, Big Papi is starting to hit. In June he is hitting .308 with five homers and 12 RBIs. On the season he has 6 homers and 30 RBIs so that shows how hot he has been. Jason Bay has 18 homers and 66 RBIs while Youkilis has 12 home runs, 40 RBIs and a .316 batting average (keep in mind he missed some time with an injury). The reigning MVP Dustin Pedroia, is having a down season offensively with two homers and 28 RBIs. He is also hitting .286 which is to low for him. Mike Lowell, J.D. Drew and Jacoby Ellsbury do not have gaudy numbers that shine the stat sheet but make their presence known very clearly on the game. On the mound tonight is a guy who I have been very critical of, Brad Penny. On the season Penny is 6-2 but fields a 4.94 ERA. If you look at his three June starts, he is 1-1 with a 2.70 era. In Penny’s only inter league start he pitched great against the Marlins not giving up a run through five innings. Look for Ellsbury to be the x-factor tonight as his speed will cause Lannan chaos. Tuesday’s MLB odds show the Red Sox -123 against the Nationals with the total set for 9 runs.
The Nationals have found a little bit of life as of late. They have won four of their last five games including a series win at Yankee Stadium which is hilarious to say the least. The biggest slugger on the market is Adam Dunn who has 18 home runs and 49 RBIs. You can bank on him being dealt by the trade deadline. A guy that will not be available is the star third baseman for Washington, Ryan Zimmerman. On the year he is hitting .293 with 12 homers and 43 RBIs. Cristian Guzman and Elijah Dukes contribute hear and their offensively. On the defensive end, this team is atrocious. On the mound tonight is their “ace” John Lannan. Fresh off his Yankee Stadium dominance, his reward is to face the best team in the American League. Lannan is 2-0 with a 1.72 ERA this season at home. In three June starts he is 2-0 with a 1.16 ERA. Those three games were against, The Yankees who can’t hit anyone they have not seen, The Reds who could be one of the top five worst hitting teams in baseball and The Mets who have more injuries then could be imagined. Look for a slip up here tonight from Mr. Lannan
Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Red Sox are 9-3 in their last 12 games overall. Boston is 6-2 in their last eight games following a win. As stated above the Nats are 4-1 in their last five games and have played much more inspired. Tonight though, it won’t matter at all. Way to much fire power coming from Bean town. The line is very respectable to take, so don’t hesitate. Lets make it rain.
Jordan’s Pick: Boston Red Sox -123 (BEST BET)
How’s a DOUBLE WHAMMY for your Monday night fever? My final score of 6-1 A’s was off, they won the game 5-1, for that I apologize. No, but on a serious note our BEST BET Athletics -1.5 (+140) was a breeze as the UNDER 8 runs was a success as well. The underdog Rockies was a hit as the OVER 9 runs came through along with it. A 4-0 night followed a 2-0 day on Fathers Day Sunday. 6-0 in our last six picks. I am hopeful you folks have capitalized on these picks as comments are always welcome.
