Baseball Picks: Boston Red Sox at Minnesota Twins
Written May 26, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
The Nation is 27-18 on the season which is currently good enough for first place in the AL East. They are on a two game winning streak and will look to improve on that mark tonight. Early MVP candidate Jason Bay continues to torment pitchers as he has 13 homers and his RBI total has reached 47. Pedroia is hitting .337 from the plate while Youkilis is coming back off his injury looking sharp. The chemistry these guys show is second to none. The bullpen is one of the best in baseball. Tonight they send Jon Lester to the mound, his early season struggles have been confusing to many, he has a 3-4 record with a 5.91 ERA. In his last start he was much better though going 6.1 innings of work while only allowing one run to Toronto. Last season Lester had two starts against the Twins but picked up a no decision in both. I expect him to pitch very well tonight. Boston’s depth will be the key as the bottom half of their order can go toe to toe with many teams top. Youk and Lowell are both coming off huge games, look for Pedroia to have a three hit night and Ellsbury to swipe at least two bases. The baseball lines for Tuesday show the Red Sox -110 against the Twins and the total set for 9 runs.
The Minnesota Twins are 22-24 on the season. They have catcher Joe Mauer back healthy and is playing like one of the best players in baseball, which he is. They have previous MVP winning first baseman Justin Morneau playing great. Michael Cuddyer and Jason Kubel have both been key contributors. After that, there is not much else. Denard Span has been decent while Carlos Gomez and Delmon Young have been awful. They get nothing out of their middle infield at all. Their pitching staff has been a colossal disappointment overall. Perhaps the most consistent starter they have is taking the mound tonight in Nick Blackburn. He is 3-2 with a 3.83 ERA. What concerns me about him is the 5.34 ERA he has during night games. Last season he had two starts against the Red Sox and went 1-0 with a 4.26 ERA. In order for Minnesota to win this game Blackburn will be the only x-factor that could matter. While Lester has been bad this year his break out game could come at any moment, tonight perhaps. I just don’t know if the Twins have enough offense to pick up a victory here.
Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Red Sox are 5-2 in their last seven games. The Twins have won four of their last five games. In the head to head match up, Minnesota is 11-5 in the last 16 times these teams have faced each in the dome. One of those wins for Boston came last year when Lester defeated Blackburn. The Nation has more power, speed and hit for better average while having a better bullpen. The value here is tremendous and is BEST BET worthy. Roll with it.
Jordan’s Pick: Boston Red Sox -110 (BEST BET)
Well, a bombing last night took place as Ervin Santana got tattooed. One bad read is only one bad loss. Lets get back to work.
