Washington Redskins at Dallas Cowboys Odds & NFL Picks
Written September 26, 2008 by Jimmy Boyd

The Washington Redskins go to Dallas to take on the undefeated Cowboys in perhaps the NFL’s best rivalry. The Redskins have won back-to-back contests after suffering a week one loss to the defending Super Bowl champs while the Cowboys have been as good as advertised and are off to a 3-0 start. The books don’t see Dallas’ winning streak coming to an end any time soon and have listed the Cowboys as 11-point favorites with the total set at 46.
The Jim Zorn era begin with a 16-7 loss to the New York Giants in the Redskins opener. The offense couldn’t have looked any worse in that game. Since then, Washington has rallied from a nine-point deficit to beat the Saints and held serve against the previously unbeaten Cardinals last week.

Washington’s better play is directly proportionate with the improved play of QB Jason Campbell. In the last two weeks, Campbell has completed 70 percent of his pass attempts for 514 yards and three scores, and he is yet to be picked off. A veteran line anchored by five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Chris Samuels has supplied solid protection for Campbell and has also aided the running attack.
We expect the Skins to try to keep Dallas’ big play offense off the field by mixing in a short passing games with a heavy supply of running plays to Clinton Portis. The Skins know they can’t win a shoot out so they will try to control the ball and the clock. Portis has 248 yards and three scores in the early going. Fellow bruiser Ladell Betts figures to tote the pigskin as well. The two have helped the Skins achieve the 12th best rushing offense in the league.
Dallas QB Tony Romo has been picked off in each of the Cowboys first three games and he will be going up against a very oportunistic secondary this week. Washington’s defense has forced five turnovers in the team’s back-to-back wins and have turned those takeaways into points more often than not. While the absence of pass rusher Jason Taylor will hurt some, the Skins will still put a respectable defense on the field – one that is capable of pulling off the upset if the Cowboys don’t take care of the football. Bet the Redskins at +11 to cover the spread at BetUS.
The Dallas Cowboys offense has been explosive from game the word go, averaging a NFL-best 440 total yards of offense. Much of Dallas’ success can be attributed to a gaudy 60 percent third-down conversion rate.
Tony Romo and the offense will not be sad to hear that perennial Pro Bowler Jason Taylor will miss his first start in 134 games this week. They are hoping that his absence opens up things even more for down-the-field strikes. Dallas is averaging nearly 290 passing yards per game (3rd in the NFL) this season. Wide receiver Terrell Owens has 19 grabs for 193 yards and three touchdowns and tight end Jason Witten has 273 yards on 20 catches. All together, Romo has 892 yards and five touchdowns with three interceptions.
Perhaps the success of the passing game stems from a solid running attack led by the duo of Marion Barber and Felix Jones.
The offense has been so good that the defense is not getting its due. Outside linebackers DeMarcus Ware and Greg Ellis have led a potent pass rush which has sacked the QB 10 times through the first three weeks.
