Washington Redskins 2009 Mock Draft
Written April 24, 2009 by Black Widow
Jim Zorn’s first season as head coach had its share of ups and downs. The Redskins got off to a 6-2 start before plummeting in the second half with a 2-6 finish. Some say owner Daniel Snyder has become a more patient man, but the time is now for the Redskins to make a move. With several veterans, most of them on defense, either hitting free agency or in most cases pregnant with unwieldy salaries, the team faces a tough battle to maintain a high level of play without much money so spend on free agents or draft picks. There’s no mistaking it, Zorn and GM Vinny Cerrato will be on the clock for ‘09. Hog’s Haven speculates that the Redskins are playing up the fact that they want USC quaterback, Mark Sanchez, in order to draft someone else. I too feel they have some other needs to address before QB:
1.) Defensive End – The Redskins need multiple players on the defensive line. Washington hasn’t drafted a D-Linemen higher than the fifth-round since 1997. With Jason Taylor getting cut, and DE Phillip Daniels and DT Cornelius Griffin on the back ends of their careers, the Redskins have to make a move here. DE Andre Carter has failed to become a top pass rusher as well. DT’s Kedric Golston and Anthony Montgomery are fine, but apparently not up to the team’s standards. That’s why signing DT Albert Haynesworth in the offseason was a must and now this team is set inside, but they clearly need some pass rushers coming off the edge to wreak havoc in opposing backfields. Good Fits in ‘09 Draft Class: DE Tyson Jackson (LSU), DE Michael Bennett (Texas A&M), DE Kyle Moore (USC).
2.) Outside Linebacker - All three LB spots could use some help. London Fletcher believes he’s a Pro Bowler and at times plays like it, but he also has holes in his game. But the bigger need is on the outside where Marcus Washington has been cut and Rocky McIntosh wore down and hasn’t made a lot of plays. The Redskins need a high-motor player with some playmaking ability, or two. Good Fits in ‘09 Draft Class: SLB Clint Sintim (Virginia), WLB Marcus Freeman (Ohio State), ILB Jason Phillips (TCU).
3.) Offensive Line - Many feel that Stephon Heyer will never develop into a quality starting tackle. Chad Rinehart, who never saw the field as a rookie, will likely be best at left guard, where Pete Kendall played pretty well last season. That’s the extent of the Redskins’ young talent on the offensive line. ORG Randy Thomas needs to be replaced at some point, and C Casey Rabach is good, not great. A tackle might take precedent, but the Redskins won’t pass on a top inside talent if available. Good Fits in ‘09 Draft Class: OT Michael Oher (Ole Miss), OG Duke Robinson (Oklahoma).
4.) Punt Returner - Antwaan Randle El had a 36-yard punt return in Week 15 last season, which was his longest return in more than two years. He has a 6.3-yard average over the past two seasons and constantly makes too many fair catches, giving his team no shot at big plays in the punt return game. The team needs an injection of life at this spot to avoid bad field position and help an offense that had serious scoring issues. Good Fits in ‘09 Draft Class: RB Percy Harvin (Florida), PR Chris Williams (New Mexico State).
5.) Wide Receiver - Yes, the Redskins still need help at WR despite taking two second-rounder’s in ‘08 with Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly. Whether it comes from within or if the team chooses to draft a receiver-returner or a multi-dimensional players like Florida’s Percy Harvin or Penn State’s Derrick Williams, this group must make more plays. Good fits in ‘09 Draft Class: WR Percy Harvin (Florida), WR Brandon Tate (UNC).
