Washington Redskins at Philadelphia Eagles Football Picks & Odds
Written October 2, 2008 by Jason Lowry

One of the best matchups in the NFL this weekend is no surprise a game between two teams in the NFC East, where it seems every team has a chance to take the divison. This time around fans are treated to the Washington Redskins (3-1) and the Philadelphia Eagles (2-2), in what should be a classic battle of solid offenses and great defenses. The Redskins come into this one after a very impressive win at Dallas last weekend, while the Eagles struggled without running back Brian Westbrook and fell to the Bears 24-20. Even with how good the Redskins played last week the oddsmakers are giving them no respect, as the Eagles come in as 6 point favorites over the Redskins at Sportsbook.com
The Redskins come into this one having to feel like they can beat anyone after the way they went into Dallas and played with what many were calling the best team in the league. The Redskins offense is riding the shoulder of Jason Campbell who continues to emerge at the quarterback position. So far this season Campbell has thrown 878 yards and 6 scores, but most importantly he has yet to turn the ball over. Clinton Portis continues to run the ball effectively as he has 369 yards and 3 scores this season. Even with the additions of all the rookie threats at receivers the veterans Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle El continue to lead this team in receiving, with Moss leading the way with over 400 yards and 3 touchdowns. This offense faces a tough task this weekend against a very good Philly defense.

As for the Redskins defense it hasn’t given up a ton of points this season, but has really showed its weakness against stopping the pass, as they are giving up over 242 yards a game through the air. Though they have been much better against the run, they have still need to improve on this side of the ball. One bright spot of this defense so far has been the play of rookie safety Chris Horton, as he added another pick last week against the Cowboys and now has 3 on the season. The Eagles showed just how important Brian Westbrook was to this team when they failed to score against the Bears on 4 straight plays inside the 10. Westbrook does it all catching and running, and he torched the Redskins last year for 345 and 3 scores in the teams 2 meetings. So bad news for the Redskins, as Westbrook looks ready to go this weekend. Donovan McNabb has been very impressive this season, as they Eagles have the best passing offense in the NFL at 262 yards a game. A large part of that has came from rookie receiver DeSean Jackson, who already has 327 yards on 22 catches. Look for the air attack to be at it again this weekend against the Redskins poor pass defense, and with Westbrook healthy this offense could return to the form it had against the Cowboys earlier this season.
After getting torched by the Cowboys in week 2 for 41 points, the defense hosted Pittsburgh and shut down the Steelers allowing just 6 points. But last week they allowed the lowly Bears offense and to throw for 3 touchdowns. The Eagles did have 2 picks, but that was a game they should have won. The defense will have to find that form it had against the Steelers again this weekend, or the Redskins might pull off the upset this weekend in Philly. Bet the Eagles -6 at Sportsbook.com
