2009 Washington Redskins Football Predictions

Written June 19, 2009 by Nick Scarpa

2009-washington-redskins-season-previewThe NFC East is not for the weak and the Washington Redskins will be fielding the least talented team in the division. After a hot start in 2008 the Redskins imploded down the stretch in Head Coach Jim Zorn’s inaugural year. The pressure is now on Zorn to produce a winner for the high-priced Redskins in 2009 or he most likely will be shown the door. The offensive line is creeky but if they can protect Campbell and new All-Pro DT Albert Haynesworth can dominate the Redskins could top the .500 mark.  Locking at the NFL odds for the upcoming season, the Redskins are at +3200 to win the 2010 Super Bowl.

Jason Campbell was actively being shopped in the off-season as the Redskins unsuccessfully pursued Jay Cutler. Campbell is good at not turning the ball over and being a “game manager” but he lacks playmaking ability and field vision. The offense does have some playmakers with speed to burn in RB Clinton Portis and WR Santana Moss. Portis and Moss are injury prone however and the depth behind them is limited. Portis when healthy is an elite NFL RB that can do a little bit of everything. Also added in the off-season to the O-Line was jumbo jet Guard Derrick Dockery to help an aging line. Zorn’s West-Coast offense was running smoothly last season until Portis was hobbled and Campbell was asked to throw down field more often.

With money to burn the Washington Redskins splurged on DT Albert Hayensworth for $100-million. With Hayenesworth the Redskins defense should be nasty against the run. The pass-rush was ordinary last year but could get a boost from rookie DE Brian Orakpo from Texas. The linebacking unit has average ability and the secondary lost an important piece in cornerback Shawn Springs. The secondary has a pair of talented covermen in Carlos Rodgers and DeAngelo Hall but they lack depth overall. Special teams are a sore spot for The Redskins who have a very erratic kicking situation.

Washington will need to take care of business against non-division foes in 2009 to have a chance of surviving the NFC East division. The Redskins have not come close to winning a championship in some time and will need first half offensive MVP Clinton Portis to stay healthy and the young receiving core to develop quickly to help Campbell. Look for Washington to finish even money in 2009 and tie for 3rd with Dallas in the division.

This is a weak analysis of the Redskins, and is typical of the nonsense that a lot of sports reporters are re-hashing about the team. The Redskins will be the biggest sleeper in the NFL this season, and won’t finish with less than 10 wins and a playoff berth.

The writer in this article displays a keen sense of not knowing what he’s talking about. What a complete douchebag analysis. There are recent articles quoting Steve Jackson and Jerry Gray talking about the depth of the Secondary and the strength of that unit in particular. This article ranks up there with the Elvis sighting on the Enquirer. People sitting around talking out of their arses with no sense of what’s really going on.

As a Redskins fan, I hope the Redskins surprise everyone
this coming season. It would be sweet. The O-Line has to get better, Campbell needs some other WRS besides Moss to really make a contribution and do so on a consistent basis.
I really think the offense needs to use more of a two running back set. Portis cant carry the load all the time.
If Betts can’t contribute more, then either draft another running back or get a productive one thru the free agency.
Yeah our defense was tough last year but still it couldn’t stop some other teams when it mattered most.
The 2nd Dallas game is a good example of this. If the Redskins offense doesn’t get better, then it won’t matter how good the Redskins defense is, because other teams will wear them down like they did in 2008. Pittsburgh made our offense look so weak, and wore down our defense. This year the Redskins must dedicate themselves totally to improve their overall win record. TEAM EFFORT!!! The Redskins have one of the largest and most loyal fanbase in the NFL.
As a North Carolinian all I have to say is HAIL TO THE REDSKINS. North and South Carolina are still Redskins country. Yeah the Carolina Panthers may play in Charlotte, but Charlotte is right in the middle of REDSKINS COUNTRY.
    GO REDSKINS!!!! FORGET PREDICTIONS!!!FORGET HYPE!!!
JUST GET OUT THERE AND PLAY SOME FOOTBALL AND FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!!!!!

Here’s to the Redskins proving all the naysayers wrong
in 2009!!! HAIL TO THE REDSKINS!!!
Living in Chester, SC I agree with the comments posted
by NC Redskins fan. There are alot of Redskins fans
still in the Carolinas. Panther fans rag me from time
to time. Always saying I should root for the Panthers
since I am from the Carolinas. I simply explain to
them that My father raised me up on the Redskins, and
he also taught me a thing or to about LOYALTY.
The REDSKINS are the real team of the Carolinas. All
true North And South Carolina folks are REDSKINS fans.
    GO REDSKINS !!!!!

I’m a diehard Panther fan, keep talking Deadskin fans, real team of the carolinas hah, yeah i admit there are alot of Deadskins fans in the Carolinas, but you folks need to know your place. The Carolina Panthers are the team now whether you like it or not. Loyalty?? hah to what?? the Deadskins are nothing more than a hyped up losing team year after year. I bet the Deadskins won’t win five games in 2009. Can’t wait to hear the excuses. and I can’t wait for October 11th your deadskins come to play the Panthers..bring your crying towels Deadskin fans because the Panthers are going to run all over your hyped up losing team. Get ready to hear that phrase you Deadskin fans know all to well “REDSKINS SUCK” I think the Panthers will score at least 45 points on the Deadskins like we did in that pre-season preview in 2008.
Keep Dreaming Deadskin fans, that’s about all you folks can do. PANTHERS RULE!!!!!!!!
