Redskins Seahawks Spread

Written by

The Seattle Seahawks host the Washington Redskins Sunday in a match-up of bottom feeders in the NFC. These are two teams headed in opposite directions, with Seattle surging recently, and Washington fading fast. The Redskins have won five of seven meetings with the Seahawks over the last decade, including a 20-17 road victory in 2008.

Odds makers in Las Vegas have installed a line of Seattle -3.5 over Washington and a total set of 37 points.

Seattle

While the Seahawks got off to a rough start this year, fewer teams have been more impressive over the last couple weeks. Seattle (4-6, 2-2 home) pulled off the upset of the week on November 13th, downing the Baltimore Ravens 22-17. To prove that win was no fluke, they went on the road last week and topped the St. Louis Rams 24-7.

Marshawn Lynch continued his stellar play against St. Louis, rushing for 88 yards and a touchdown. The Seahawks allowed a season-low 185 yards while forcing three turnovers. Sidney Rice played a big role in the win, throwing a 55-yard pass to open the game. He also caught a touchdown pass, and drew a pass interference call that set up a field goal. Chris Clemons had three of Seattle’s five sacks defensively.

Seattle ranks 28th in the NFL in total offense (298.5 yards/game) and 11th in total defense (333.0 yards/game). Jackson is completing 60.4 percent of his passes for 1,921 yards with seven touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Lynch leads the team with 595 rushing yards and six scores. Doug Baldwin has emerged as their leading receiver with 32 receptions for 544 yards and two scores. Rice has missed a few games due to injury, but he still has 32 grabs for 484 yards and two touchdowns.

Washington

It has been a tale of two seasons for the Redskins. Washington (3-7, 1-4 away) won three of their first four games. However, they went on to lose their next six contests, and they haven’t been all that competitive. Mike Shanahan has been changing back and forth between starting quarterbacks, and this team is still looking for its identity. Give the Redskins credit for laying it all on the line last Sunday against NFC East rival Dallas, but they came up short 27-24 in overtime.

Washington managed 336 total yards against the Cowboys, but they committed two turnovers which really cost them a chance at a victory. Trailing 24-17 late in the fourth quarter, the Redskins would tie the game on a 4-yard touchdown pass by Rex Grossman to Donte Stallworth with only 14 seconds remaining. They got the ball first in overtime, but Graham Gano’s 52-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right. Tony Romo would march his team down the field, setting up a game-winning 39-yard field goal by Dan Bailey. Grossman threw for 289 yards and two touchdowns with one interception in the loss.

The Redskins rank 24th in the league in total offense (312.7 yards/game) and 14th in total defense (338.7 yards/game). Grossman will likely keep his starting job after playing well against the Cowboys. He is completing 58.7 percent of his passes for 1,636 yard with eight touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Washington lost starting running back Tim Hightower for the season, and Ryan Torain (192 yards, 3.5/carry) and Roy Helu (248, 4.9/carry) haven’t been able to produce consistently in the running game. The offense could get a boost this week with the likely return of No. 1 receiver Santana Moss, who has missed the last four games with a hand injury.

Betting Trends
