Redskins vs. Cowboys NFL Preview & Prediction

Written September 26, 2008 by Jason Lowry

This weekend the Dallas Cowboys look to keep it rolling when they host the Washington Redskins in a tough NFC East showdown. The Cowboys calmed the talks about the Packers as they went into Green Bay and won 27-16, and remained a perfect 3-0 on the season. After losing the opener to the Giants, the Redskins have really picked up their play winning their last two, including a 24-17 win over the Cardinals last week. The odds makers don’t think this one will be close at all, as BetUS.com has the Cowboys listed as 11 points favorites over the Redskins.

The Redskins playoff chances are not going to be easy, as the NFC East is loaded with great teams. The Redskins are currently tied for 3rd at 2-1, and a win this weekend could really improve their chances. Jason Campbell hasn’t been all that flashy this season throwing just 4 interceptions, but the key stat comes in the fact that he has thrown zero interceptions. Santana Moss remains the go to guy for Campbell, as he has 276 yards and 3 touchdowns on the season. Running back Clinton Portis has been solid all season, and his play is what really gets this offense going. This unit will have to be on top of its game this weekend, as there is no question the Cowboys will score plenty of points.

The Redskins defense could give the Cowboys troubles, as they shut dow Kurt Warner and the Cardinals passing attack last week to just 192 yards and 2 scores. The problem is the Cowboys have star players all over the field, and not only can they throw the ball, but they have quite the duo at running back with Marion Barber and Felix Jones. This unit just has to keep the Cowboys from scoring every time they get the ball, and find a way to put pressure on Romo and hope he makes mistakes. Bet Redskins +11 at BetUS.com

Stopping the Cowboys offense doesn’t look like its going to be easy, as they just have so many weapons to beat you with. Quarterback Tony Romo has been great besides a couple miscues against the Eagles. Romo already has 892 yards through the air and 5 touchdowns. Its no question that tight end Jason Witten has been Romo’s favorite target this season, as Witten has hauled in 20 balls for 273 yards, but TO is doing the scoring as he has 3 touchdowns and a solid 193 yards through the air. We already mentioned that the Cowboys running attack is solid, as Marion Barber leads the way with 285 yards and 4 scores, but rookie Felix Jones has 2 touchdowns of his own on just 18 attempts. This is the best unit on arguably the best team in football, so its hard to imagine them slipping up this week at home.

The Cowboys defense showed what it was made of last week against the Packers, as they quieted a Packers team that had been lighting defenses up in the early going. The reason this is even worth mentioning, is the fact that this unit was picked apart by the Eagles in week 2 for 37 points and over 350 yards of offense. Last week Adam Jones got in on the fun and made his first big splash of the season when he forced and returned a fumble for 21 yards. If this defense plays like it did against the Browns and Packers and not like what they showed against the Eagles, this team is going to win a lot of football games. Bet Cowboys -11 at BetUS.com

Professional handicapper Jason Lowry sees this one being a little closer than what the NFL betting odds makers are thinking, as he doesn’t see the Cowboys running away with this one. Final Score: Redskins 24 Cowboys 31. Remember to get more free NFL picks each week from other expert handicappers.
