Retief Goosen Odds to Win the 2008 Masters

vWhile almost everyone will be watching Tiger Woods and his every move this weekend when the Masters get underway at Augusta National, there are still many other golfers out there with realistic shots at taking home the green jacket this weekend. One of those golfers is Retief Goosen, who seems to play well almost every year around this time. He is currently sitting on two major championship victories, but has yet to take home the trophy at Augusta. He won’t be the only player looking for his first jacket, but he comes as one of the favorites this weekend behind the big names of Woods, Mickelson, and Singh. Here is our look at Goosen, and why he could take home his first Masters victory, and why 2008 just might not be the year for the South African.

Retief Goosen’s Odds to Win 2008 Masters 28/1 at Bodoglife.com

Why He Will Win:

Goosen is due here at Augusta, after 3 straight years finishing in the top 3 it’s only a matter of time till things go his way and he is able to win at Augusta. Goosen ended up finishing up tied for 2nd last year behind the champion Zach Johnson. Goosen has a pretty solid year so far in 2008, though he has yet to win on tour. His best finish came at the CA Championship where he finished tied for 2nd. While his two major victories have come at the US Open, he is most consistent here at Augusta. Goosen doesn’t do anything that really stands out, but tends to do everything just right. And while he might struggle leading up to the Masters, things just seem to click when this tournament gets underway. So while he might not be the most talked up golfer coming into this years event, don’t be surprised if he is lurking around the top of the leader board come Sunday afternoon.

Why He Won’t Win:

The thing with Goosen is that it’s all or nothing. He could very easily come in this weekend and shoot lights out and take home the victory, but he also has the type of game where things could go wrong and he could be sent packing come weekend play. He isn’t that great of driver, and you really need to be able to get off the tee in Augusta if you want to shoot some low scores. He hasn’t been hitting to many greens in regulations, and when it comes to putting he is average at best there as well. If it weren’t for his excellent play here over the last few years he would be much lower on the odds to win. While his numbers have never been great he has always seemed to have a pretty decent scoring average, but in 2008 he has seen his scoring average jump to 51st on tour from 35th in 2007. While we don’t expect a blow up this weekend from Goosen, we would be shocked if he took home his first green jacket in 2008.
