Rick Pitino: Sex Was Consensual

Written August 12, 2009 by Jack Jones

rick-pitino-extortionLouisville men’s basketball head coach Rick Pitino has some problems.  First of all, he was being accused of rape from an incident back in August of 2003 at a Louisville restaurant.  Pitino has not denied that he had sexual intercourse with the woman, but he claims it was consensual.

Pitino has confirmed reports that he gave the woman $3,000, which she used to have an abortion (presumably from a pregnancy resulting from the encounter), but he says at the time he thought the money was simply for the woman to buy health insurance.  He has been forthcoming about having sex with the woman, once at the restaurant where they met, then again, a few weeks later at a different location, but denies any wrongdoing.

Prosecutors who have reviewed the case say that Pitino will not be charged, however, Karen Sypher, the woman making the claims, has now been indicted for trying to extort Pitino.

You can read the full Rick Pitino extortion story in USA Today for more details, but our real concern here is the whether or not Pitino will be penalized or terminated by the University.

According to his contract under “Termination for Just Cause” (6.1.4): “Employee’s dishonest with Employer or University; or acts of moral depravity… “, would be grounds for termination.  What exactly is does “acts of moral depravity” mean?  I guess it is up for the University to decide.

The Louisville basketball team is coming off of an impressive season, and it would be a huge blow to the program if anything serious happened to Pitino.  Going into next season, the Cardinals are listed as one of the favorites to win the 2010 NCAA Basketball Tournament at 12-1 odds.
