Rider at Northern Iowa

The Rider Broncs head out on the road tonight to take on the Northern Iowa Panthers in tonight’s opening round of the College Insider tournament with a scheduled tip-off time slated for 8:00 PM ET.  Handicapper Mike Cortright examines the teams and provides his free prediction on the game.  The sportsbooks opened tonight’s matchup with Rider being a 4.5 point road underdog and the line has now moved up to Rider +5 at most outlets.

Rider (23-10) enters this matchup tonight playing very good basketball as of late. The Broncs come into this game winning 6 of their last 7 and 8 of their last 10. Rider is actually 4-3 ATS their last 6 games and is 4-1 ATS their last 5 games as an underdog. Rider’s recent success is coming on the offensive side of the ball in which they are averaging 75.9 points per game the last 7 games. The defense is allowing 69.9 point per game though the last 7 games which is about a point higher than their season average. Rider though is one team that has played really well on the road going 14-5 SU away from home and is 14-4 ATS. The Broncs this year on the road are 8-2 ATS against teams that are above .500 and are 16-5 ATS their last 21 road games as an underdog. Rider is 14-3 ATS their last 17 games against teams that have a home winning % above .600. Rider is 4-0 ATS their last 4 non conference games.

Northern Iowa (19-13) enters tonight matchup really struggling as of late. The Panthers have actually dropped 7 of their last 8 and are just 1-8ATS their last 9 games. Northern Iowa looked like they were showing teams why they were a sweet 16 team last year after their 18-6 start but then thing went downhill after the loss of senior forward Luca O’Rear. Since the loss of O’Rear the Panthers have lost 7 games in which they are being outscored by 6.9 points per game. Northern Iowa is 12-4 SU at home this season but are just 5-7 ATS. The Panthers are 3-9 ATS as a favorite of 7 points or less this season. The Panthers are 0-6 ATS the last 6 games against a team with a winning SU record. Northern Iowa is 1-6 ATS after a SU loss their last 7 games and are just 2-4 ATS at home in that situation.

Rider has played a very good season so far as I look to see that continue from them tonight. Northern Iowa was a sweet 16 team last year and now they don’t even get into this NCAA Tournament this year what does that do to a team mentally? Look for Northern Iowa to struggle again tonight and for the Rider Broncs to go on the road and grab the cover as a 5 point road underdog.
