2009 Humanitarian Bowl: Bowling Green vs. Idaho Spread

Written December 23, 2009 by Kyle Hunter

Both Bowling Green and Idaho had pretty successful seasons, but they did it in different ways. Bowling Green finished 6-1 in their last 7 games after a slow start, while Idaho started strong and lost 4 of their last 5. In the end both of them finished the regular season at 7-5 and made the postseason. This should be a high scoring affair, but which team’s season will end with a win and who will go home disappointed? The Idaho Vandals were definitely overlooked when the season started, but they quickly got the attention of bettors as they went 7-0 against the spread in their first 7 games this year. The Vandals then went 0-5 against the spread in their last 5 games and lost 4 of those games straight up. Nathan Enderle had some injury trouble, which definitely held Idaho back toward the end of year, but he appears to be healthy and ready for this one. Enderle is the leader of the offense and threw 18 touchdowns and 9 interceptions this year. DeMaundray Woolridge and Princeton McCarty form a nice tailback tandem that helped Idaho stay nice and balanced on offense. Both of those running backs averaged a very impressive 5.7 yards per carry on the season. Max Komar is the big play receiver, with 62 receptions and 10 touchdowns on the year. Idaho’s defense has been terrible of late, allowing 49 points per game in the last three games and 451 total yards per game for the season.

Bowling Green put it together late in the year thanks largely to a much improved offense. Tyler Sheehan threw for 3,664 yards and 23 touchdowns on the year. Sheehan only threw 6 picks the entire season. Bowling Green averaged 310.6 yards per game through the air, 8th best in all of college football. Wide receiver Freddie Barnes is arguably the best receiver in the country and his numbers are just absolutely brilliant. Barnes averaged 11.5 catches per game and had 138 receptions on the year, just four short of the NCAA record. Barnes caught 16 touchdown passes and caught 22 passes in a single game, easily a school record. Barnes is definitely the star of the Falcons team. The running game has been almost non-existent, which has hurt them against opponents who can rush the passer well and defend the pass. Bowling Green’s defense is solid against the pass, but has been poor against the run all year long. In the last three games the defense allowed just 19 points per game, so the Falcons defense has improved in keeping their opponent out of the end zone.

The college football odds for bowl season show Idaho as a two point favorite in this one. The posted total is set at 68 points. When making football picks for this game remember that this game is basically a home game for Idaho.

Bowling Green has been playing better football than Idaho over the last few games, but can they overcome a hostile crowd and win this one? The Falcons defense will need to stop the run. On the other side Idaho must try to slow down the passing attack of Bowling Green and minimize the damage that Freddie Barnes does.
