Robert Morris vs Michigan State: March Madness Preview
Written March 20, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
The Spartans were the regular season champions in the Big-10 conference. They are physical team that loves to win ugly. Their leading scorer is sophomore guard Kalin Lucas averaging 15 points and 4..5 assists per game. Raymar Morgan is the vocal leader of this team who collects 11 points and 6 rebounds a game. Michigan State’s big man Goran Sutton is solid. He averages 10 points and 8 rebounds. The Spartans score 72 points per game and only give up 62 against. They are an experienced team that is eager to prove doubters wrong. Many people believe this team is an overrated #2 seed and could be an early exit in the tournament. While Robert Morris should oppose no threat, their second round opponent will. Michigan State did have plenty of quality wins, they won vs Oklahoma State, @ Texas, vs Kansas and sweeping the home and away with Ohio State. Michigan State is to strong and to experienced to be scarred of a first round upset. Be aware as the second round looms. Odds makers have Michigan State -16 against Robert Morris.
Robert Morris, The Colonials from Northeast conference will face Michigan State tonight at 9:55 eastern time. RMU are the conference champions and feel they have a legit chance to make a stunning upset run here. The Colonials did challenge themselves out of conference facing Xavier, Duquesne and Miami (Fl). While they did lose all three of those games it gave them a good Idea of what they’ll see today. There will be one player that The Spartans must be focused on stopping. That is senior guard, team captain, Jeremy Chappell who averages 17 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists per game. He is a dominating player who can compete with anybody in the country. Now, If RMU’s big man Rob Robinson is able to get Goran Sutton into foul trouble. This game could be quite interesting at halftime. That is a big if though. The Colonials averaged 71 points per game and gave up a respectable 65 against. If Robinson plays a superb game RMU will be competitive mid-late second half. If he is a now show and allows Sutton to man-handle him, this one will be a flat out run away.
Haimo’s Hot Notes: Michigan State has been very unimpressive as of late. Tom Izzo is one of the top coaches in the nation so you know he will have his bunch focused and executing their game plan. RMU does have a couple of players who have the talent to play with the Big-10 conference champs. Whether or not they show up today is a different story. Robert Morris only had one game this year with a registered spread, it was in their championship game which they won but did not cover. The odds makers have Michigan State currently -16, when you analyze that it really should seem quite low considering the seeds and level of competition faced. A very tricky one we have here. If you are leaning towards RMU remember who they are facing and be confident Robinson will play well if you like that pick. If you think Michigan State is a great selection, keep in mind their struggles as of late and be comfortable they’ll come out gunning.
Betting Line: Michigan State -16
