MLB Picks: Rockies at Dodgers

Written June 30, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz

rockies-dodgers-predicitons-063009The Rockies are 40-36 and are very much apart of the NL wild card race. I have stated in previous articles how monumental changing managers from Clint Hurdle to Jim Tracy has been. Winning 17 of 18 at one point is something no Rockies fan could have ever imagined being possible. Brad Hawpe continues on his tear hitting .327 with 12 homers and 55 RBIs. Todd Helton has been great hitting .313 with nine homers and a surprisingly high 53 RBIs. Troy Tulowitzki has started to swing a better bat of late, he has 12 homers and 31 RBIs. Dexter Fowler is a great young rookie and Ian Stewart is a great bat who needs to improve his fielding skills dramatically. On the mound tonight is a pitcher that is no where near as good as his record states. Jason Marquis is 9-5 with a 4.22 ERA. He is a pitcher that tops off at 90 MPH and is very hittable around the plate. His home/away numbers are comparable while his night record is 4-4 with a 5.18 ERA. Marquis is 2-2 in June with a 4.83 ERA. He pitched very well against the Dodgers in his only start verse them this year. In order for the Rockies to win tonight’s game they’ll need a big game from both Helton and Hawpe. They must capitalize with runners in scoring position. When you face a top level team like Los Angeles you can not afford to drop big opportunities.  The Dodgers are listed at -163 against the Rockies and the total is set for 8.5 runs according to Tuesday’s baseball lines.

The Dodgers are 49-28 on the season and currently own the best record in baseball. Mr. Torre has brought respect to this team. He teaches the youngsters and is respected by the veterans. This team prides themselves on being a well balanced attack. Casey Blake, Orlando Hudson, Matt Kemp and James Loney all have 40+ RBIs. Their best hitter this year has been Andre Ethier who has 15 home runs and 52 RBIs on the year and has been sizzling of late. As a team the Dodgers are hitting .274 from the plate which is solid. On the mound tonight is one of the best pitchers in baseball in Chad Billingsley. His 9-3 record and 3.10 ERA speaks for itself. This is a guy who I have followed since he was an 18 year old kid. Chad is a fire thrower who has four pitches. His home/away numbers are similar and he is even better in night games then day going 5-1 with a 2.70 ERA. He pitched well in his only start against Colorado this year going 6 innings allowing three runs and picking up the victory. Look for Billingsley to pitch superbly tonight and for Matt Kemp who does well against Colorado to have a big time performance. Five runs will be plenty tonight.

Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Rockies are 12-3 in their last 15 road games. Colorado is also 20-6 in their last 26 games overall. The Dodgers are 47-20 in their last 67 home games. LA is also 49-21 in their last 70 games as a favorite. In the head to head match up, the Dodgers are 12-2 in the last 14 meeting between the two. Dodgers will win this game 4-1 tonight. Medium play is advised.

Jordan’s Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers -1.5 Runs (+135)

WHAMMY! The winning streak has now reached 12 games in a row. We doubled up on the Red Sox last night hitting the BEST BET money line and the run line as well. At this rate Ill be looking to purchase a new Ferrari instead of a Mercedes. Lets keep this fire hot streak going tonight. Comments always welcome.
