Roy Jones Jr. vs. Felix Trinidad
This Saturday, Madison Square Garden will be the host of the long awaited pay-per-view fight between Felix “Tito Trinidad and Roy Jones Jr. This fight features two of the greatest boxers of our era. Trinidad (42-2, 35 KOs) is a five -time world champion with an incredible knockout rate of 80 percent. He has defeated names such as Oscar De La Hoya, Pernell Whitaker, and Fernando Vargas. Winning the belt in welterweight, junior middleweight and middleweight classes. Jones Jr. (51-4, 38 KOs) is an eight-time world champion winning the belt in the middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions. Jones Jr. was labeled the “Fighter of the Decade” in the 1990’s. He has defeated the big names of Bernard Hopkins, James Toney, and Antonio Tarver. He is also the first former middleweight champion to win a word heavyweight crown in over 100 years.
While both fighters are past their prime of years ago when they dominated the sport. Both fighters are coming in over the ages of 35, with Jones Jr. being the older of the two at 38. We still don’t see any reason how this fight will disappoint the viewers. Both fighters are going to be looking to end the fight early with their amazing ability to send their opponent to the floor. One key that makes us favor Jones Jr. is that this fight is at or below the catch weight of 170 pounds. While Jones Jr. has fought and had success at this weight, Trinidad has never fought above the catch weight of 160 pounds. This is going to be a great advantage for Jones Jr. who has been quoted saying “It will last no longer than four rounds,” and that “Trinidad is smaller than me and it will be hard to not try to knock him out.” Trinidad’s words don’t seem to have the fire of Jones Jr. as he said, “I have too much boxing left inside of me and I want to show that I am still one of the best fighters in the world. I feel good at this weight and it will be a great fight.”
This fight was set to take place back in 2001 after Don King’s middleweight tournament at the very same Madison Square Garden they will touch gloves at this upcoming weekend. Trinidad came into the tournament as the favorite to win and get the much anticipated shot against Jones Jr. But Trinidad was then beat by “The Executioner” Bernard Hopkins, and soon retired from boxing for the first time. Trinidad has only fought 2 times in the last five years, losing his most recent in 2005 against Winky Wright. After losing to Wright he again retired from the sport for the second time until coming out again for the upcoming fight. On the other hand Jones Jr. has fought nine times since 2001, going 7-2 in those fights with both losses coming against Antonio Tarver. We just don’t see Trinidad having much of a chance against the bigger better Jones Jr. The fighter most ready for ring action has to be Jones Jr. He will take some shots from Trinidad, but will dish out way more than he receives. Trinidad wasn’t good enough to fight Jones Jr. in 2001 and isn’t good enough to fight him now.
We are taking Roy Jones.
