Baseball Picks: Kansas City Royals at Minnesota Twins
Written May 2, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
The 2009 Kansas City Royals are not just your every year doormat team. They are 12-11 so far and have been very competitive. They have one of the best pitchers in baseball in Zach Greinke who is 5-0 and has allowed only two runs in 36 innings pitched. That comes to a 0.50 ERA. From the plate they have been decent overall. Mike Jacobs has with four home runs and has added 13 RBIs. Catcher John Buck has three homers and a team leading 15 RBIs. David Dejesus and Coco Crisp have played fairly well and the rest of this team actually shows up to play every night. Weird to think, I know. Tonight’s starter is Brian Bannister who has been brilliant in his first two starts going 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA. The two wins came at Cleveland and against Toronto.. Those are two very formidable opponents. Mike Jacobs will need to play a big part in this game. With the Twins hitting the ball well, Kansas City will need him tonight to bring in runs as I expect them to be at a premium. Odds makers are not buying into the Royals as a team that should be respected in any way. If they keep staying around .500 and win the occasional series here and there. That all will change.
The Twins have been given a boost of energy with the return of their star catcher Joe Mauer. Baseballs best catcher was in injured for about the first month of the season with inflammation in his lower back. In his first game back he went 2-3 with a double and a solo home run. His all-star partner in crime and previous MVP winner, Justin Morneau, has been fantastic. Morneau is hitting .330 from the plate with six home runs and 21 RBIs. While Mauer and Morneau are the two studs of the team, the most surprising hitter for the Twins this year has been Jason Kubel. besides the fact he hit for the cycle already, he is batting .300 with four homers and 16 RBIs. You then add guys like Denard Span and Michael Cuddyer and you have a very solid lineup. On the mound, you also have a good rotation with some experience mixed with youth. Tonight Minnesota sends young Glen Perkins to the mound. Through four starts he is 1-2 with a 2.48 ERA. That shows you he has pitched very well but has gotten no run support to speak of. Last season Perkins was fantastic going 12-4 and showing signs of possible stardom. He started one game against Kansas City last season and picked up a no decision going five innings allowing one run on four hits. The key player for the Twins tonight will be their big bopper Justin Morneau. Like Jacobs on KC, runs will be at a premium and every RBI chance will be crucial.
Haimo’s Hot Notes: The Royals are 7-2 in their last nine Saturday games. The Twins are 43-18 in their last 61 home games overall.. The Royals are 4-9 in the last 13 meetings between these two teams and the UNDER is 11-5-1 in the last 17 meetings. I truly believe the Royals will be a tough opponent for the entire season. They are showing signs of chemistry and true care for winning baseball games. Bannister is underrated as Perkins is as well. When you analyze this game it matches up like a toss up. The value is enormous here. Minnesota is currently -144 while the Royals sit at +130. The O/U is at 8.5. Ring the bell, we got our SATURDAY UNDERDOG SPECIAL.
Betting Line: Minnesota Twins -144/Kansas City Royals +130 & O/U 8.5
Jordan’s Picks: Kansas City Royals +134 & UNDER 8.5 Runs
So, we suffer our first losing night in three weeks. While the profits we have made together so far this year has been enormous, losing is still never something that sits well with me. So today, we will look to put last night in the past and start a new streak. In reference to the games. Beckett got rocked and the Cubs imploded in extras. All that needs to be said. My record speaks for itself, I’ll have several games for you folks today. That includes the Manny Pacquiao vs Ricky Hatton fight. Lets get it done.
