Rutgers College Football Predictions 2009

Written June 28, 2009 by InfoPlays

2009 Rutgers Football PredictionsBowl games have become a staple at Rutgers under coach Greg Schiano. That doesn’t figure to change this season. Fans are starting to want more, especially with the stadium expanding to 55,000 seats. Will this be the year that Rutgers finally wins their first Big East title? It all depends on what kind of play they get from their new quarterback now that Mike Teel is gone. At worst, a fifth straight bowl appearance looks like a forgone conclusion. Rutgers is listed at +500 to win the 2009 Big East Conference. Those college football odds are worth keeping in mind because the Big East is up for grabs this season.

Offense: How will the Rutgers Scarlet Knights replace the most accomplished quarterback in school history and the best receiver the program has ever produced? With Mike Teel and Kenny Britt gone, the answer to that question holds the keys to the season. The offensive line return fully intact, anchored by future first-round pick Anthony Davis at left tackle. All four tailbacks return, and tight end Shamar Graves is back as well. The uncertainty at quarterback is a major concern, because as you can see, all the pieces are in place. Fifth-year seniors Domenic Natale and Jabu Lovelace, who combined for just eight pass attempts last season, are the frontrunners until heralded true freshman Tom Savage is ready.

Senior wide receiver Tim Brown, who averaged a monster 20.9 yards on 27 catches last season, has to make the transition to being the go-to-guy after being a complementary receiver throughout his career. The running game will be solid, with Joe Martinek expected to have an expanded role. FB Jack Corcoran returns for his senior season to pave the way. Rutgers, which led the Big East in scoring last season, might offer a few new wrinkles, with the occasional option look possible. New coordinators Kirk Ciarrocca and Kyle Flood replace John McNulty, who left to take a job with the Arizona Cardinals.

Defense: Greg Schiano will relinquish his defensive coordinator duties for the first time since 2005, which is really the only uncertainty about this unit. He handed the reigns to assistants Bob Fraser and Ed Pinkham to serve as co-coordinators. With middle linebacker Ryan D’Imperio and defensive end George Johnson poised for huge years, this could be the Big East’s best defense. Alex Silvestro shifts to end after a big season at defensive tackle last year, leaving the interior spots to Blair Bines and Charlie Noonan for now. There is more depth and size on the defensive line than at any time in Schiano’s previous eight years as head man.

Sophomore Justin Francis and redshirt freshman Scott Vallone are a pair or young tackles that missed last season, but they could see ample playing time this time around. D’Imperio, who had 93 tackles and 12.5 for loss, heads a linebacking crew that should be special, with Damaso Munoz and Antonio Lowery on the outside. Manny Abreu is a capable reserve as well. There is concern in the secondary at one cornerback spot, but the other is in great hands with three-year starter Devin McCourty. There’s experience at the safety positions with Joe Lefeged and Zaire Kitchen, along with depth in rising second-year players Khaseem Greene and Patrick Kivlehan.
