Rutgers vs Connecticut NCAA Football Betting Lines
Written October 29, 2009 by Jordan Haimowitz
The Scarlet Knights are 5-2 on the season. Do not let that solid record fool you though as their wins have come against Howard, Florida International, Maryland (ACCs worst this season), Texas Southern and Army. So the strength of schedule you can see is quite poor. With that said, Rutgers freshman quarterback Tom Savage has looked solid and has a very bright future. Since replacing Domenic Natale in the first game of the season vs Cincinnati in which was an embarrassing home opener, Savage has thrown for 1.105 yards with five touchdowns to one interception. The youngster has been lucky enough to have a powerful running back in sophomore Joe Martinek. The man they call “Jersey Joe” has collected 573 rushing yards with seven touchdowns and a 5.3 yards per carry average. Savage also has a talented wide receiver duo in Tim Brown and Mohammed Sanu. Brown is the clear cut go to guy, he has 649 receiving yards and three touchdowns this season. This offense is good enough to play vs. the Huskies this weekend, however, the Scarlet Knight defense has been tremendous allowing only 16.6 points and 300 total yards of offense per game. Head Coach Greg Schiano takes his team on the road today and is 0-2 in Big East play. The x-factor for the road team this afternoon will be Joe Martinek. Uconn has struggled stopping the run, if Rutgers can get their big bruiser going then they will have every chance wanted to come away with their first conference win of the season. Our latest NCAA football odds have placed UConn as 7.5 point home favorites while the over/under is set for 46 points.
The Connecticut Huskies play their first home game since losing their teammate Jasper Howard in a stabbing. Last weekend they were up 24-21 late to West Virginia in Morgantown until Noel Devine broke a 53 yard touchdown run late to seal the deal on a 28-24 win. Emotions will be sky high as these players will be wearing their hearts on their sleeves. Head coach Randy Edsall has had to deal with this traumatic situation and has seemed to have done a brilliant job keeping his kids level headed. Starting quarterback Cody Endres has thrown for 1,314 yards with six touchdowns and four interceptions. Uconn has a prolific running back combo in Andre Dixon and Jordan Todman. Dixon has rushed for 654 yards and seven touchdowns with an average of 4.8 yards per carry. Todman has totaled 596 yards and seven touchdowns with an average of five yards per carry. The Huskies defense is stout and can compete with any other defense in this conference. They allow 19.6 points per game and a total of 323 yards against. All of their defensive categories are even or a bit worse then the Rutgers numbers but like I stated above, the Scarlet Knights have faced far worse competition then not only Uconn but any other team in the Big East. If Dixon and Todman can run the ball well it will set up the play action pass for Cody Endres. The x-factor for the home Huskies will be the running game. It is obvious that Rutgers will let Joe Martinek run the ball a ton so Dixon especially must be up to that challenge. Get serious about NCAA football betting with a $500 match bonus from BetUS today!
Haimo’s Hot Notes:
Connecticut are 8-0 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
Scarlet Knights are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games as a road underdog.
Scarlet Knights are 8-2-1 ATS in their last 11 games following a S.U. win.
Huskies are 20-7 ATS in their last 27 home games.
Rutgers has slightly better numbers but Uconn has faced the much tougher competition. After breaking down all the pros and cons for these two teams, I have come to the conclusion that these two teams are even with the Huskies maybe being a tad better. I am very surprised the spread is as high as it is. Expect the two teams to have success on the ground while both defenses will play with a ton of speed. FREE PICKS below.
